Every Logical Reason You’ll Ever Need to Combat “Messina is Leaving” Rumors:
Messina is still credited for every episode of Season Four on IMDB. (The only other cast member that this is currently true for is Mindy. And while IMDB is not always the most reliable sources, it is very consistently updated on production matters.)
Messina is not the only member of the cast working on other projects. Messina currently has four projects in the post-production/production phase. Ed Weeks is currently developing a pilot. Ike Barinholtz currently has four projects in production/post-production phases. Beth Grant currently credited to be working on 14 projects outside of The Mindy Project, all in various stages of production. Xosha Roquemore is credited with having two projects currently in post-production as well.
Messina is NOT the only cast member working on other projects and he is NOT the only person whose schedule has been accommodated, now or in the past. While his absence is perhaps the most noticeable, Messina is not the only cast member working outside of the show. This is in no way indication that Chris has decided to leave television.
Also, take a look at these resources on how films are scheduled. (Here is an example of what a schedule would look like.) Films are hard to schedule and the fact that Mindy and the show were so accommodating of Chris’s schedule is a good sign. It shows a healthy working relationship.
For those worried Chris isn’t coming back for 4B, Ike has confirmed that Danny is in the picture. But he won’t say how, and that’s because he can’t reveal the revelation to that whopper of a cliffhanger.
Mindy’s social media has made no indication that Chris is leaving, and neither Hulu nor has the show’s social media accounts made any statements on the subject. In fact, all mentions of Chris since 4x12 have been overwhelmingly positive.

(Not to mention all the wonderful critical reception that Mindy and Messina have been receiving for the show.
To focus on the business aspects, Chris Messina has a contract with the show, one that has been updated pretty recently because of the move to Hulu. And while I know that Mindy is the type of showrunner that would graciously let someone out of their contract, it’s pretty much been confirmed that Messina is appearing in 4B which means Messina’s contract and credits stand, at the very least until the end of the season.
Another Thing to Note: Messina, while not physically present in all episodes this season, was credited for every episode in 4A and contributed voiceovers for every episode that he was not present in. (Also, Chris was at the table-reads, even for episodes he didn’t physically appear in.)
Messina has always discussed how, foundationally, for him as an actor, comedy has been rooted in realism. I don’t think Messina would feel betrayed by Danny’s characterization, in fact, I think he’d be excited to work on such a realistic storyline. This arc is right up Messina’s alley.

Messina has always praised the writers of the shows and their “ballsy” decisions.
“I just thought it was really ballsy of her and the show, and I like that. I thought it was unique. You have to write what’s good and what excites you, and this story line excited them, and I’m all for whatever that is. I thought it was ballsy
Botton Line: Don’t equate strain between Danny and Mindy as a schism between Chris and the Creative Team.
