Danish artist & curator Lars Schwander has sent 2014Frames a real treat with his selection "Under A Black Sky". The selection is made up of photographers which Schwander himself states are " connected through an almost surreal approach –– they all have this strange desire from an almost hidden place in their (our) minds." and includes a Schwander's own work, along with luminaries such as Roger Ballen and Jeffery Silverthorne. This is one that's not to be missed. Glasgow based artist Christina McBride has brought together an international selection of female artists who work with, and around, the photographic medium, looking at the interactions between photography and other media such as sculpture and performance.

All four artists seem to create an emotional, yet detached body of work, personal yet distant in their tone often emerging with abstract thoughts and imagery which settle somewhere at the back of the viewers mind.

The Hasselblad Foundation are well known for their research into, and education of photography which not only focuses on their native Sweden and the Nordic region, but also their operations worldwide. Here, they have provided 2014Frames with 5 interesting photographers from The Hasselblad Foundation Collection, a vast collection of some of the most widely known names in photography’s history.

Included in this selection is the Collection’s latest acquisition, a series looking at LGBT culture in Russia by Annica Karlsson Rixon, along with Santiago Mostyn’s look back at the violence in Istanbul, comparing the gaze of the tourist to that of the CCTV cameras.

Mindaugas Kavaliauskas of Kaunas Photo Festival has provided a selection of photographers which along with folioPORT.org echoes the two organisations main aims of bringing new and exciting photography to the forefront of gallery. curator and the public’s mind.

Julia Koch, junior curator at the Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt is taking us on a trip to Brazil in order to discover some young, creative image makers from the South American country. Julia provides us with six photographers, each working in a different aesthetic style and interpretation of the medium.

B-B-B-Books is an independent publisher based in Stockholm. Their collaborations with Klara Källström and Thobias Fäldt, under the name of KK+TF, along with designers Axel Von Friesen and Petter Törnqvist who work under the name of 1:2:3 is an ongoing project and the focus of this selection. Their works take us on a journey through social history and geopolitics in Europe, from the Julian Assange case in “Wikiland”, to the symbolic and physical erosion of memory and history in “A Beach” and Swedish mythology surrounding it’s relationships with Russia. We’ve already spoke about Helge Mruck’s selection N.E.W.S. in relation to the inclusion of double award winner at the recent Format Photography Festival Yan Preston, however that shouldn’t stop us from discussing the selection as a whole.

N.E.W.S. represents four artists, including Helge herself, who look at identity, both in a personal sense and in a geographical sense living on the border of places which are miles apart yet seemingly indistinguishable from the self. All of the images in this selection create an open, yet introspective atmosphere a discussion of culture without stooping to obvious tropes.

Nazar Foundation is a not for profit organisation from India, who seek to democratise photography as an art form, promoting education, culture and emerging photographers through workshops, festivals and a range of public facilities. Edinburgh based Yukatan Press operate as a small and independent photography press co-run by two photographers and aims to celebrate contemporary photographic practices and the printed matter by creating a platform where emerging photographers get deserved exposure through an online blog and physical publications. Another Glasgow based group now in the form of The Forgotten Collective, formed from members of the UWS Class of 2013, The Forgotten Collective's aim is to create a platform for newly graduated photographers to work from, sharing the burdens of exhibition costs, and workspaces while also sharing information and ideas in order to negate some of the problems which affect new photographers after their studies. Each member is encouraged to continue and develop their own styles and ideas, leading to a varied collection of imagery which contrasts with and compliments the rest of the group in equal measures. There's so much going on right now in Copenhagen that it's not surprising that a number of the 2014Frames groups are based there, and here's another of the Danish contingent. Open Space is a not for profit, artist led project space which aims to present photographic arts alongside performance and video installations, making for an interesting discourse between the three. Edinburgh based group Not the Finished Article performs a much needed role for the photographers involved, a place where they can hash out what they call "half baked ideas" and discuss work which isn't quite ready for public consumption, while also being able to debate works and projects that influence or otherwise from outside of the circle. We at 2014Frames think this kind of thing is something that every photographer should seek out in one way or another. Finnish group Maanantai Collective are an experiment in anonymity, 8 unnamed photographers working under a common title and exploring themes of distance and scale their 2014Frames selection creates a body of work which subverts the usual ideas of authorship and attachment, ensuring that no part of the series is engaged with over others. The "Nine Nameless Mountains" of the work's title comes from the Norwegian Lofoten Islands where the group became as one.
