Artist statement:
Transparency is defined by allowing light to pass through so that objects behind can be distinctly seen. As I find myself often staring outside my window next to my bed during quarantine because of the COVID-19 pandemic, I long for the normalcy and freedom that I can no longer access in the outside world. This window serves as my vehicle to explore using my imagination of the wonderful landscapes I can visit in my head.
I am interested in looking through the surface and being able to see the dimensionality of whats in front of me in relation to its background. Similar to how Katie Rodgers would create her 3D shadow boxes mimicking a miniature theatric set design, her technique of working backwards by using the last page as its main foundation to build layers and create depth is a great resource for this series.
In my series called Transparency book, one is able to peel layers of the painting as you flip the pages, with the verso and recto painted images changing, building up and regressing with every turn. With each unfolding of the piece, compositions are made with sides of the pages, almost having a before and after transition right before your eyes.
This interactive process give the audience an insight to a broken down dimensionality of an artist’s usually hidden process of painting over, covering up, layering and building up of an image. This series is binded in a tractable binder, giving the opportunity to rearrange pages and change up the composition anytime, leaving room for the viewer to experiment and become the artist themselves.
In the series, I am exploring transparency through clear plastic materials such as protective binder pages, projector plastic films, holographic bags and on top of paintings in which process of painting responds immediately to what I see lying beneath. Other unconventional supports are used such as a mirror and an iPad; a contrast of a virtual world being translated in a traditional fine art practice of painting. I had a chance to paint plein air, capturing the essence of the environment as it changes through time, and having the painting become its own scenery within the landscape.
It has been a very interactive painting experience painting in a real life moving environment and capturing it in a static painting. I have a control on how I want to arrange these shapes, colors and forms on my canvas as if I am editing it in Photoshop through painting. These paintings are extensions of real life landscapes that are translated through paintings of how I see it in my head. It is important that I am able to photograph the series in its real life habitat, providing the push and pull of 3 dimensionality and the 2D dimensionality of a painting.

Works to date
Amazing work Shanice!!!! I like your use of materials, textures, colors and shapes! I like how it is 3 dimensional and it makes me want to reach out and touch it.
I also appreciate that you painted on the canvas frame. It gives a shadow box feeling because of the dimensions
“Carousel ride”,15x8inch,acrylic with collage, 2021
You did such an incredible job on this series!!! Everything works so well, and really makes me nostalgic about my childhood, and a bit sad because either seems as though kids today don't have that kind if fun anymore.
I think the only thing I'd say is I really liked the way your images looked on your green wall. The green is kind of a quirky color, but it goes with your theme and works well color-wise. It also looked cool because the shadows of you paintings were more exaggerated and contrasted against the green
Such great work Samantha!!! Such an honor to see your progress from the past painting classes to now, from your CDs, its so nice to see how you are branching out and exploring your work. The fact that the unicorn is jumping out the frame is just so amazing!!!!!
I’d love to see more of this in the future. Keep up the great work!
This is a work by Nadia K Waheed. She paints self portraits and figurative work reflecting her south asian heritage

Works by Alice Neel!!
Ive always been in awe of oil painters and the materialism of oil paint. Ive never really had a chance to explore oil paint, but I love how buttery it is and the textures it leaves behind. This is something that I always want to achieve as a painter.
I like her brushworks and her outlines.
I also love her use of color and how she would put unusual colors together. And how the skin tones are always has a yellow undertone. I like how at some points, her colors would mix together and create another color using the same colors on her palette.
