Sam, Amanda and I got together to take pictures of some of my tie dye to use on the background of our invitations. I had to put my small business on pause due to covid, which was best because I make most of my sales through pop up shops. I'm going to start back up in the summer, and doing this shoot made me excited all over again 🥲
Let service industry workers say “fuck” please
As a former service industry/retail worker I had more issues with my coworkers and managers than my customers. Terrible customers eventually leave the building, but the terrible coworkers remain.

Although Lily was able to get the jist of what I was trying to say in braille, it was still a bit off because of some of a few spacing and alignment issues.
So I decided to add rhinestones onto the sample paper she'd given me.
I was able to meet up with her again before her trip to Texas to see if she was able to read it, and it was a success... however, the paper was not what I had in mind presentation wise. She suggested that the brailler can work well with transparent adhesive paper, so I had the idea of having her type the words out, Rhinestone it up, and cut it into strips so that it would be one continuous line leading to my artwork
My best friend Lily has Glaucoma. She's been blind her whole life, and has been reading and writing in braille for almost as long.
We've been friends for about 16 years, and she has definitely taught me a lot about the blind and visually impaired community, and connecting with people outside of nonverbal visual gestures (ex. eye contact)
I knew she was the perfect person to start with, and I was able to get her reaction on video
I loved when she began chuckling while reading what I wrote in braille. I would love for others to have a similar reaction when touching my artwork, so now I'm considering how can I include jokes or quirky sayings that can still relate to the actual artwork and the meaning behind it.
I asked her to type out the words to one of her favorite songs on her brailler, Dear Maria by All Time Low, so I can see the comparison between a full braille cell of 6 dots, and a variation of letters and words. With contractions and without contractions
I went to Hobby Lobby to get different sized rhinestones for my project. I really wanted a physical reference as well so I can at least get an idea of whether or not my braille was accurate. The workers barely knew what I was talking about 😵💫 and it really got me thinking...
Blind and visually impaired people do everyday things that able bodied people do, like crafts, baking, cooking, exercise, etc... So why don't we have more braille or audio labels for things to make them easily identifiable?? I could rant about this all day but in the midst of me being frustrated on the check out line, I spotted the restrooms... and the one place they'd have braille-- the plastic restrooms signs!
So I measured the height of the braille at 0.7cm, the width of a single cell of braille at 0.3cm, and the spacing in between two separate cells at 0.6cm. I've also come to find out that the spacing and height may vary, but what is most important is that there is consistency throughout.
I went home and tried out a few lines for my friend to read, also trying to stay consistent with my spacing.
The first line reads "abcd"
The second and third lines read "left cheek right cheek one two three" (lol that was the first thing I thought of so I just went for it)
Disability Rights
Is another topic I’m interested in. As someone who has close friends that are blind and visually impaired, I’ve come to learn of both the triumphs and struggles that come with being disabled today. One of the issues that pique my interests is when a disabled person has to make a choice between accepting government funding, or working a job that may not have appropriate accommodations in place. The limited funding provided by the government (similar to welfare) is just enough to get by, and in many cases even less than that. For an able bodied disabled person who is willing to work instead of struggling between paychecks, what was once their primary source of income, becomes threatened, forcing them to either work more than needed or to not work at all fir the sake of comfort.

This series is an inspiration, honoring the individuals who put their lives on the line during the course of the pandemic, and serves as a reminder that they are (super)human.

Society has created a divide between those who are vaccinated and those who are not. People are being marginalized and ostracized for exercising freedom of choice. I think it also has a bit to do with “cancel culture” as well-- where people are essentially punished for having views/beliefs/opinions that differ from that of the vast majority. We are all navigating this uncharted territory together, and I think that monomaniacal suffering has blinded us.

Final thoughts?
This was by far one of the worst semesters I've ever had in the history of me pursuing higher education. Lol.
However
I've also had the most breakthroughs (and breakdowns) this semester than I've ever had. I feel like after all of this pressure, I'm really starting to come into my own, and even making my own lane after feeling like I had no direction. Looking back on everything I've made almost surprises me... like "wow I did that..."
I'm interested to see where next semester will lead me, as well as looking forward to a fresh start. This semester taught me that big need to be kinder to myself and to believe that I have to offer is special, too.
I think my main goal for my series next semester would be to have more REFINED work. I mean, tight, clean lines, and even working on better lighting/presentation. I want to make something that could be ready to hang in a gallery... not just my bedroom wall. Lol
Tyler Macko
Is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Dayton, OH. What really draws me to his work is his attention to detail in his yarn work. It's truly beautiful, and it's incredible the way you can step back, and view the full picture, but also zooming in captures so much more intentional details that may have been missed the first time around. The way the yarn bunches in on itself when he's doing particular shapes is something I connect with, and it makes me excited to see these shared experiences in another person's artwork.

Laetitia Ky
Is who I did my research presentation on. Her work really captures me.. both the execution and the meanings behind them. There's also a primitiveness about her process that interests me-- a spontaneity that is unique to her, and carries so much energy. I also love that her face is equally as important to her hair scupltures in terms of composition, and the way the audience reads her work.
Previous Works
I really clung to this series at first, but to be completely honest, I think that's why I had such a hard time. Sometimes I do representational work, but this time around, maybe because it was a reflection of my own life, I was trying to get every detail right, that it started to take the fun out of making it. As I mentioned before, I had fun doing meticulous work (like the repetitive lines that make up the walls) but the overall picture I was no longer happy with. I'm glad I went in a different direction because although this series was a "part of me," I truly think that my current series, Relationships really reflects who I'm becoming as an artist, aesthetically and conceptually.

Artist Statement
This body of work is an investigation of the social and emotional Relationships that makes us who we are as individuals. The connections made over the course of a lifetime are many fragmented pieces that make up the whole being. Using yarn in various color schemes on 14 x 18 in canvas, along with drawing inspiration from the intricate line work of Tyler Macko (and some of my previous work), abstracted shapes push and pull on each other to create movement and dialogue. Common relationships we have with others are broken down, such as Romance, Neighbors, Business relations, Family, and Friends, to show how each can be traced back to the most important relationship we have-- the one with the Self.
You have such a distinct style of art making that I haven’t seen before. Your use of color is either bold and in-your-face, or it can be soft and easy. I can definitely see the glowing effect you mentioned Mahmoud Said having, reflecting in your work as well. Your use of negative pace is interesting-- these open shapes with other colors peeking through leave me wondering what’s on the other side, alluding to your interest in multidimensionality!

Incredible transformation of this piece. I remember seeing it in class for midterms, and this is a complete 180! The addition of the shoelace in place of the bandages on the lungs is pretty cool, and still speaks to that restrictive quality that asthma has. The collage of faces is also powerful, as it could be representative of anyone-- you, me, a coworker, a person on the street. many different angles on body image, and I also love your color choices for the background. I think it would be effective to find a way to expand your artwork to the backgrounds, so that the figure(s) don’t feel isolated. Great work

Experiment Painting #3 (Loose Painting)
In these following round canvases, I somehow managed to try something that actually made me less anxious and less stressed about what had been going on with this week and from the last (trust me, sadness is really a waste of time and so as the distressing moments of whatever little thing that had me overthinking from the past timing). So, with this kind of technique painting I’m sure not new of, I tied myself to try out loose hand painting where I used only black acrylic and either 1 or 2 brushes to start my painting and thus, “Squid Ink” was born! I may THINK OF doing a series of so for next Fall so let’s hope this’ll pass by sooner ;)
This is beautiful Nour! This is something so different from what I’ve seen you do before, so intriguing. I love the simplicity of the black and white, but the strokes really create a harmony of light and dark, thick and thin. There's also this feeling of catharsis, like I can feel your release of emotions in these pieces. Even though it was an experiment, I’d really look forward to seeing your take on this as a series
