I recently saw a post on Tumblr about a teacher who struggles with her students calling other people gay. This made me think about the situation at my OWN elementary school and I am struggling with how to address the situation.

another door has opened

I got a call today about an interview that I am going to have at the end of this week.  It's a montessori school.  I have never known anyone to teach at a montessori school so I WELCOME any advice.  I know that I don't have many followers, but someone PLEASEEE offer advice!

And wish me luck too!  This is a pretty great school!

rejection and other things

I had my first job interview this week for an temp. position as a 4th grade teacher.  It is a pretty rough school.   The class has been through three teachers already this year.  Have you seen the Ron Clark Story?  It's that.  Anyways, there were two of us going for the job.  The other person happened to be a grade level team member, who has also become one of my friends.  Once the interview was over, they told me that I was very impressive and I would have no problem getting a job if this position was not the right fit for me.  I thought that sounded a little weird, but I did not think much of it. The day after the interview, two people from the school came to observe us teach and tell us a little more about the school. That night I got the phone call that no one wants, "You were an excellent candidate, but unfortunately we can not offer you the position."  My friend did get the job.  I am happy for her but I was really hoping that I would be offered the job.  No one likes rejection :(   I am beginning to feel like the only reason they came to observe me was because they wanted to observe her.  And since we are on the same hall, it would have been pretty awks if they hadn't seen me too.

If you hadn't had a job interview yet, be prepared for rejection.  It sucks, but I wasn't prepared.  If you DO experiences rejection from a job, think of it as a time to build experience.  I can now go into my next job interview with one interview under my belt.  I know what to say, I know how to act, and I know that I must be qualified enough to get a job.  I'm not going to lie to you, it sucks, it really sucks, but I am trying to believe that this means there is something better in store for me.  I am more than qualified and I have passion for teaching.

I am going to make this school wish they had hired me.  When they see my name as the next (female) Ron Clark, they are going to wish that they had offered me the job.

I've been bad

I've been student teaching for about 8 weeks now and I haven't made a single post on here...I'm terrible.  But this just tells you HOW busy it is!  I'm almost done with student teaching now, it's crazy.

Here is my big news.  I've officially applied for a job with several school districts.  I can't believe that this point in my life has already arrived. 

I wish that I could make a post that summarizes everything that has happened over the duration of student teaching, but that would be impossible.

So NOW, I will continue to live blog the job search process.

Day One: Student Teaching

Well the first day of student teaching in complete.  These first few days (Wednesday-Friday) are serving as "transition" days.  We are getting back into the groove of being at the school, making our schedules with the teacher, and having a group wide panic attack.

This is how it works.  I take on one subject at a time until I am essentially in charge of the whole class.  I also take on all the transitions that are before and after that subject.  For example, if I take on math and my students have lunch after math, I am responsible for getting them to lunch and such.  For about 6 weeks I will be the actual classroom teacher and then week by week I will give back the subjects to the teacher.

So how was my first day back?

got a lot of hugs.

student got hurt at recess.  Stitches?  Probably.

student thought it would be a good idea to scratch another student out of anger. 

stressed about lesson plan.

I have my own cute little desk in the classroom, I will make an attempt to put up pictures of it once I've set it all up!

So as my volunteer hours before Christmas come to a close, I will no longer be able to blog about my experiences in the classroom BUT instead I hope to do some reading and reflecting. Educating Esme: Diary of a teacher’s first year is a book the my mother read for her Elementary PDP and Simon Fraser University and she has recommended it to me. I read this book last year!  I recommend that everyone, not just teachers, read this book.  It opened up my eyes to what it is really like in the schools. A MUST READ!!!
