Okay, so. I’m getting really tired of the idea that “true” Star Wars fans “know” that TFA was a terrible movie, that Jar Jar Abrams singlehandedly ruined the franchise, that Rogue One was everything TFA wasn’t or whatever. I’m honestly sick of it. I grew up watching Star Wars. I can remember being in diapers and seeing Darth Vader on the TV screen, and I remember my parents taking me and my brother out of school early on opening day to see RotS. I loved Padmé, and Luke, and all the Skywalkers. I was a fan for years, and when Lucasfilm announced that they were sold to Disney and there would be new movies coming out, I was over the moon. More movies! Oh man! I wonder what they’ll do next! I was optimistic even when people on the Internet were screaming about how Disney would turn Star Wars into a musical cartoon. Having seen The Avengers and enjoyed the Pirates of the Caribbean series, I knew Star Wars was in good hands under the Mouse. TFA came out, and when I saw it…it was even better than I hoped it would be. I was giddy and ecstatic over it all in a way I hadn’t been in a long time. In fact, I saw it a total of five times in the theater, a very rare thing for someone who sees most movies once in the theater and is okay with never watching them again. To this day, when I pop in my TFA Blu-ray, I enjoy it just as much as that first time at the movies. It’s just…a really great film to me. I love it a lot. And it’s so special, especially since it introduced two of my favorite characters to me. I think JJ Abrams did a great job with Episode VII, and the professional critics who made the movie sit at over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes would agree with that idea. You’re not a “better” fan for hating TFA. You’re not “edgy” for trashing on JJ Abrams and claiming that anyone who enjoys the movie doesn’t “get” Star Wars. You can hate the movie all you want, of course; everyone has their own reasons for disliking what they dislike, and I’m not about to force you to like something you don’t. However, what I will tell you to do is to let go of this idea that “true” Star Wars fans only like certain Star Wars movies, that certain movies deserve to be disregarded while others should be placed on a pedestal if you want to keep your Official Star Wars Fan Badge™. Guess what? TFA exists! TFA is an official Star Wars movie! People who enjoy TFA…are real Star Wars fans! Anyway, I love TFA, and I’m so, so excited to see what happens next in Episode VIII. It’s a great time to be a Star Wars fan!
Ironically, this reminds me of when I, someone who was shown my first Star Trek film at seven, was called “not a proper Trekkie” because I enjoy the rebooted trilogy. First two directed by JJ.
This post is oddly fitting for me. I have just watched all Star Wars movies, apart from Rogue One, back to back during the last few days – for the first time, I might add. L et me tell you a couple of things about how I experienced them: - the prequels are good movies. I found the effects at the beginning of Episode I a bit cringeworthy but other then that I found even this movie, which many Star Wars fans hate, entertaining. I loved Qui-Gon Jinn and while Jar Jar was a total airhead, I wasn’t even nearly as annoyed by him as I had expected. - I found the some of the waxing quotes by Anakin and Padmé a bit over the top and cheesy in places but overall I can’t claim that this made me want to stop the movies at any point. Especially the last half an hour of The Revenge of the Sith, when everything fell in place, was great. Also if Rey is a Marie Sue, Anakin is the Marie Sue to end all Marie Sues… but that’s the point…the Force is strong with these ones! - the original movies are really charming and fun and I absolutely get why people fell in love with them so much. One of the things that made them memorable for me were the characters who are incredibly likable from start to finish, flaws and all. (Also I now consider myself a C-3PO groupie) - I was really surprised at how good the special effects were. Many things looked even more realistic than in the prequels because they worked with real sets and not computer generations. - Also might I add I was amazed at how Leia does more action scenes than many female characters in today’s action movies? Not to mention she was commanding the troops around even then? I am honestly quite surprised at how negatively some people have taken the fact that the leads of the two newest movies are women, when they grew up watching Leia in action…. Another thing I found interesting is that it is implied that the Force is with her just as it is with her brother and father. Has she ever used it? Will she use it in Episode VIII? - and now comes the reason why all of these Star Wars purists will put me in a cone of shame: My favourite out of all these movies was The Force Awakens. I LOVED this movie. It combined all of the original elements and built a new storyline out of them, intelligently mixing story elements from the others movies together. Even though I loved Luke, Han and Leia I thought Rey, Finn and Poe were the most adorable little things and I just wanted to constantly cuddle these kick ass babies! There were so many moments in it where even I smiled because of the symbolic meaning behind them. It was exactly what this franchise needed to be restarted and to introduce a new generation to the Star Wars universe. - And yes, Kylo Ren is a complete cry baby but if I am being honest, so was Anakin. (“I don’t want Padmé to diiiie….bleh bleh bleeeeeh…. I will become Darth Vader so that I might find some unrealistic, far from clear way to save her….I will kill kids and then even accidently kill her bc the idea that she might think differently from me hurts my ego…. Bc I am so powerful thanks to the daaark side of the FOOOORCEEE! And I will only regain my senses once my mentor tries to kill my son bc hey… that would be a little too horrible, huh?“ Honestly, what a twat…) - unrelated to this I might add that I LOVE the new Star Trek movies, and contrary to Star Wars I have watched Star Trek religiously as a child… I am watching things to enjoy them, to be taken on a journey and not to pick them apart and sound like a smart ass!!
