I love Halsin because not only is he a victim, but he’s also representation of an older victim who has had years (or in his case centuries) to process, minimize, and bury his traumatic past. And he didn’t get to process his trauma well, as far as we know. From what I gleaned from his dialogue, he escaped from the underdark and went right back to doing his thing. Did he tell anyone about what happened to him? Did his parents/family/friends know? After he ran out of the underdark covered in blood, did he sit and think about what happened, did he jump in a lake to clean off or did he somehow rationalize everything that happened? We don’t know. And he doesn’t think it important enough to tell us.

I think that experience shaped him more than he will ever realize. After the scene with the drow twins, as we all know, we have to tell him “hey no that was a bad thing that happened to you” after he tries telling us “it’s fine and it was a long time ago :)” when he tells us he was a literal sex slave for three years. His ability to compartmentalize and put others needs before his own started there. Also, you cannot tell me that Halsin only wants physical relationships. He expects people to be physically attracted to him and welcomes it, but the shock and relief when you go with him to rebuild Reithwin betrays his desire to be loved, wanted, and dare I say understood.

And the fact that Halsin is still able to love and care for so many all at once, be it polyamory, be it people he comes to see as his family, be it people under his guidance and care, hell even lowlife goblins that want him dead, is a fucking miracle and it makes me want to weep.

Astarion is fabulous representation of people who recently underwent ongoing, deep, tragic trauma. But Halsin is the one meant for the people who have old wounds long scarred over by time. He is forever my comfort character and you’ll have to pry him from my cold dead hands.

Two Spirit is an umbrella term coined relatively recently, encompassing unique gender identities and sexualities within the diverse cultures of the thousands of tribal nations across the so-called USA and Canada. Two Spirit exists beyond colonial concepts of what gender is. Not every queer native is Two Spirit, and not every Two Spirit native is queer. Deconstructing gender starts with understanding that western concepts of what is male and female are colonial and bigoted. For indigenous peoples across turtle island, those we consider trans/queer today were honored community members. There are no closets in tipis. Happy pride to all of my fellow 2spirited natives who have had to fight to justify who they are to colonized minds who seek to place us into their own gender/sexuality boxes. ((No, Two-Spirit is not comparable to being nonbinary or bigender or anything else. Those labels exist with ideas of colonial gender norms in mind.))
