Thoughts and Feelings about the TangYi & ShaoFei dynamic in ep 12
I love how their personalities are so obviously balanced. Most of us have either cringed or at least suffered with our police cutie Meng ShaoFei when he unabashedly started to pursue TangYi, not minding making a complete fool out of himself.
And I think it is fair to say that by episode 12 I’ve grown super fond of this deciding character trait. He so straightforward, honest and self-asserted that you can’t help but think that his openness is nothing but a strength. And because he is self-aware of the ensuing awkward situations but still unapologetically marches on, I don’t feel bad for him.
Sure he might set himself up for getting teased but if TangYi needs one thing it is honesty and openness.
To be honest, watching the tv series I didn’t quite understand what drew TangYi towards ShaoFei, but his speech in last weeks episode made it clear what he finds attractive about him and I loved every second of it.
By now they have established this tease-and-pull-back routine which I love. Their power dynamic constantly shifts and they’re playfully teasing each other while understanding each other’s boundaries and behaving very respectful towards each other.
And they talk when it is needed!! TangYi clarifying why he felt uncertain and laying his cards open for ShaoFei to decide was the best thing in episode 12.
Here, TangYi teases ShaoFei but he’s already smiling so we know he won’t cross a line.
And ShaoFei is on a par, accepting the challenge.
This is the moment ShaoFei feels that TangYi is willing to give him what he wants, what they both want, and there’s both adoration and triumph in his eyes.
Now TangYi, surprised by ShaoFei’s bold move, looks guarded - not because he doesn’t trust ShaoFei but because this is his default reaction to being put in a situation he didn’t consider in his calculations (he should’ve known better by now)
But he instantly relaxes and renders power to ShaoFei, his gaze going soft before he dares to close his eyes and entrust himself to ShaoFei.
And we can see how ShaoFei picks up on that, his eyes clouded with arousal are being filled with happiness when he laughs at TangYi for going soft.
And TangYi taking back power, when ShaoFei teases him too much and he realizes that ShaoFei is about to chicken out, a small smirk on his face.
We can see how experienced and confident TangYi is when it comes to his body and sex as he strips in front of ShaoFei in the same calm, practiced manner in which he pulled up his sleeves before he beat up his henchman.
Now ShaoFei is clearly taken by surprise, so TangYi mocks him teasingly,
pushes it even further by losing the humor and showing pure dominance, easily intimidating and arousing ShaoFei.
But he doesn’t push it too far, he can pick up on all the small clues and hints that ShaoFei’s body-language and his eyes send him. He knows that ShaoFei wants this, but that he’s nervous and uncertain. The way he holds him without trapping him and ShaoFei not moving much but just relaxing against his body, slowly inhaling TangYi’s scent just shows how perfectly they fit together. ShaoFei feels comfortable enough to be this vulnerable and TangYi is comfortable enough to show his soft and caring side. They each now each others’ strength and weaknesses and are already in this silent agreement to never exploit them.
We can see that ShaoFei feels self-conscious. I believe it is a mixture of his lack of experience (he tries to cover his nervousness with bravery), maybe some body-issues, as well as the wound being a painful reminder that he might not be strong enough to protect TangYi. But TangYi looks nothing but calm and caring so they will definitely figure this out intuitively.
tl;dr: these two are made for each other and i can’t believe how well-written and well-acted their emotional character development is.
