Is using spell check okay at all now?

In writing groups I'm in it's grammar and spell check is for newbies and those wanting a crutch or a cheat code.

I'm going to be frank with you, anon. Those writing groups sound toxic as fuck and I'd recommend finding a better place to spend your time.

Grammar check and spell check are embedded in most word processing software and have been since the 1990s. People don't have to use them if they don't want to, of course, but there's nothing wrong with using them.

English spelling is famously a bastardization of French multiplied by German divided by Latin with fifty other languages thrown in for fun. And don't even get me started on the Great Vowel Shift.

All that to say, being bad at spelling is not a moral failing nor is it a sign of weak character. It's a fact of life for an overwhelming majority of people writing in English.

Or, to put it another way, would you tell a near-sighted person such as myself that wearing glasses is a cheat code and that I should just "see better"? I really hope not.

Spell check - yes, literally every time. Spell checking was, like, the third thing people wanted personal computers to do, after calculating mortgage payments and balancing their checkbook. (Maybe fourth, playing blackjack is on that list somewhere.) If you were a serious writer, your typewriter had a rudimentary spell checker in it by the late 1970s!

People who refuse to use a spell checker are the same kind of pretentious assholes that think you shouldn't use a calculator ever. Absolutely there are steps you can take to improve your spelling, and being able to spell most words easily will make the writing process easier and more fluent. (Although you'll get a lot more mileage out of improving your touch typing.) But use the spell checker. Also use a calculator when you want to know the answer to a long division problem.

Grammar check - iffy, and it depends on the software. I don't use it because I think a lot of what it calls "grammar" is actually a point of style that I disagree with. However, if you find that when you're typing quickly you often omit or double words, grammar check is a really efficient way to type that.

Stuff like Grammarly's "reword this"? This is questionable. Now you're getting into something that is no longer your writing. If you're trying to build your voice, don't do it, because the voice you'll build is someone else's.

Asking ChatGPT to reword something for you? Now that is a crutch for people who don't want to learn to write.

Spelling and grammar checkers are no substitute for proofreading, but they are useful tools to help you conform to the conventions of standard English. Don't take their word as gospel, make sure to look up words if you're not 100% sure which option from the spell checker you want, and take every recommendation of the grammar checker with a grain of salt. And find better writers groups.

This mentality is so insanely frustrating. Why do teenagers think that people have to give up their hobbies, give up fun, when they reach a certain age? Like??

When I was a teenager writing fic, I remember finding out that one of my favorite authors was in her 50s and that just was SUCH a revelation for me!! What do you mean, 50 year olds can write fanfic?!? Does that mean I can write fics when I'm her age?? That's AWESOME! I seriously looked up to her so much. And now I'm 35 with a husband and kid, and I'm still writing fanfic and posting fandom content - and I have no plans of stopping!

If you try to drive 30+ people out of fandom, you're going to lose the backbone of said fandom!

The ageism in fandom is fucking insane. It’s strange that people seem to have the idea that fandom was created by and for teenagers… It was not. It was created by adults. How would we have ao3 if only teenagers were in fandom?

I don’t want to sound like I am hating on younger people in fandom, but god, y’all need to stop it with the ageism. You don’t have to give up what you love once you’re an adult. Honestly, the belief that you have to is pretty bad. It sounds like it would make people afraid of aging. Granted, modern society is so very afraid of aging.

Don’t give up what you love just because you’re an adult. You don’t have to. And don’t try to force others to do it either.

Hii I just wanted to ask if you know of any shows that are similar to sammy children’s day. I saw your gifs of them in the tag and really enjoyed the show. What are your thoughts on the show?? Thanks

i think i did do an earlier rambles post on this when it first aired, so you can probably look at that for further thoughts. currently there aren't a lot like sammy on the chinese bl side because they actually really only started last year summer with revenged love, so there aren't a lot of recent cbls out, although that's going to change may onwards since there are quite a number lined up. can see my latest preview/trailer posts of the upcoming cbls.

if you do want like gang-related? there's my fave history3: trapped and also kiseki: dear to me, both taiwanese bl, especially with kiseki which does have a gang leader x student cp. other than that the thing about the danmei liveactions right now and also danmei in general is that they're all pretty unique in terms of world building, trope and themes, so for the little that have been released so far, we're getting a whole spread - which is p exciting.

heya, just posted most of the trailers of the upcoming bl shows that are coming out that i'll be watching, save for double helix i guess because the main lead is a singaporean actor and there's a reason our younger gen actors and actresses and also local shows aren't known much anywhere else lol. anw not big on the old school truly toxic bls personally, we shall see, although i don't have any problems with it in general, just don't tend to pick doomed, tormenting bl if i can help it cuz sometimes i just want to punch through the screen u know.

am anticipating private galaxy for tonight, and i'll give journey with you a chance but from what i see of the trailer the acting looks a bit stilted, like something doesn't quite mesh with the historical timeline in terms of looks and the acting, altho i am ready to be proven wrong. hard to excuse awkward acting tho considering all the masterpieces we've seen so far. as for the rest there are definitely other ones that haven't been really announced that i do wanna have a look at, but will wait until character posters etc. come out for those.

but am pretty excited for to my shore special episode!!! was there when they dropped the trailer for the special ep(s) during the bangkok concert last weekend and it was utterly glorious
