I came home to a cozy apartment. You kissed me hello even though it was seven at night. It was a long day at work, and you were the perfect pillow. We took a shower too long for a reason. Our single bed was unmade from the night before. Your dog died. I held you. He was your favorite pet. I’d reassure your trembling hands that seventeen years is a long time for a dog. I went out and got a tattoo that says ‘All dogs go to heaven’ so you would believe me. Our fridge broke. We busted our asses at our jobs for it, and now we had to buy a new one. We kept a mini-fridge in its place as a joke. Neither of us laughed while it was there. That same week, the windshield shattered on our car. I handed over the money that I was going to use for a nice dinner for us. I got a bonus. I took you out to dinner on our anniversary. It reminded me of our wedding day. It was planned exactly how you wanted, because god knows I would do anything you wanted. I got you a new dog. You finally graduated college. We made love that night after a few movies on Netflix. I made love to a college graduate. I made love to you. The tattoo healed and you seemed to forget about it. Our new dog was trained well. Shelter dogs always are perfect. She chewed a hole through your favorite shoes. You were a college graduate so you got a better job and said fuck it, I’m buying new shoes. And so you did. We were okay. We were in love, so we were okay. I got a new tattoo with your name on it. You traced the letters every night on my chest until you fell asleep and I could no longer feel the movement of your nails tenderly scratching my skin. It was three fourteen in the morning when I realized that the tattoo was permanent. But so were you.

I won’t beg someone to love me. I learned long ago that there is no use in hopeless pleas of trying to make someone stay. I am too good to chase someone who does not know my worth and I am too wild to keep waiting for someone who doesn’t acknowledge my value. I want to be loved unconditionally. I shouldn’t have to fight so hard for it. I do not have the time to prove to someone that I am worth it. I shouldn’t have to prove any of that; I am worth more than that.
