It is basically Harley Quinn. Seeing this thread bugs me so much because if you want a character who turned into a clown because she got sick of not being taken seriously and being told to smile, it’s Harley Freakin’ Quinn. Harley Quinn actually managed to outsmart Batman where Joker failed! She took the hallmarks of an abusive relationship she was in and made it her own and is now a fun chaotic antihero within DC canon! Oh! And she’s in love with Poison Ivy! Bonus! 

Also if you want a character who in DC canon is self-professed protector of women, there’s Catwoman, who makes a point of protecting sex workers in Gotham. 

You do not need to turn an abusive asshole into a ‘folk hero for women’ oh my god. The Gotham City Sirens are right there, read a comic book.
