Because they can't just quite lymph leave behind this universe and go to another because they aren't going to leave behind the established characters in Spidey, Thunderbolts and F4. But what, are they gonna kill off everyone else? Keep some characters alive but shunt them into a new universe that's kinda like there's but different? ("Yes Peter, many of the people you knew and loved have been replaced by identical strangers, but look, Tchalla is alive! You met Tchalla right? And Tony Stark is a teenager! Fucking love how central to the film's core argument and theme Elliott Page is. And like I don't think it was the reason for the casting, Nolan is just being loyal and wanting to work with actors he likes, but having a trans man - especially one so often targeted by online transphobic chuds doing culture wars, including for this very fucking film- play someone Odysseus sees as the bravest man he knew really fucking hits.
