Getting into trail running in Cheshire, Yorkshire, and Italy, in preparation for Beachy Head Marathon
I have done a fair bit of trail running in recent months - in Surrey, Sussex, Cheshire, Yorkshire and around Lake Como in Italy. I find it so much fun, and think I will continue with it even though I am preparing for a road marathon.

Enjoying a tipple through Surrey for the Bacchus half marathon
It seems a long time ago, but this was when I met a load of lovely elves along the trails when I was running he Bacchus half-marathon as part of my preparation for the Beachy Head marathon. I had done enough training to cover the 13.1 miles, but my biggest challenge was hoping that I could handle drinking a glass of wine every 3 miles! As you can see, it wasn’t too bad in the end. I like club running. I am a member of three running clubs. Here, I am running with one of my clubs, East Hull Harriers at the Hornsea Beach race in Yorkshire, England. Being in a club is a great motivator when running. You have ready access to a training partner if you want one, you pick up tips; you can do running races that you would otherwise not have been eligible to enter, and which are free of charge. And there's a healthy social life around it too. What's not to like? This beach race was the first event in their winter cross country series. It was 10km, though I think I ran 1km more as I dodged around the pools of water when the waves kept coming in! The winners had wet feet, but my feet were properly dry, even if I did finish near the back of the field! But it was all good fun.
My first run after doing Beachy Head marathon exactly a week ago. These cross country relays with my club, South London Harriers are always a fun team event. My legs didn't feel too bad. I just took it easy, especially on the hills. It was also useful to do it on legs that were properly warmed up from my 15-mile bike ride to get there.

A few scenes from the Beachy Head marathon that I did over the weekend. I hadn't been sure if I would be able to get through it, so really paced myself and walked on the uphill sections. I did stop loads of times to take photos and to feast at the feed stations as well. In the end I got round without wrecking myself, albeit with slightly sore legs afterwards. This part of the South Downs is beautiful and well worth the run. Great, friendly organisation, laid back race, lots of refreshments plus hot meal and massage at the event. Highly recommended.
I spent a long weekend in Milan, but that wasn't going to stop me going for a run, especially as it was a lovely autumn day. I ran around the nearest park I know, the nearby Parco Sempione, which also happens to be next to other nice places like Castello Sforzesco, the Triennale design museum, and the Brera fashion district. Highly recommended.
My loop from Kettlewell to Starbotton and back via the Dales Way, if you're looking for a route idea.
Last week I enjoyed a mini, though hilly loop from Kettlewell to Starbotton and back via the Dales Way. A scenic 7 miles with sheep for company. Take an Ordnance Survey map, as there are loads of other footpaths and bridleways you can go along for an extended route and more hills!
I was thinking I could do the Paris-London double, but plans have been slightly scuppered by not getting a ballot place. Looking for another plan.
Still preparing for Paris, but before that I will do some hilly trail runs. This time I was on the North Downs, near Redhill in Surrey.
Today was my first time ever running in a sports bra. I was halfway through my run and I was winded and extremely hot and sweaty and ready to give up. I took a breather and decided to take off my shirt to cool off and it made a world of difference. I felt like a new runner afterwards. I’ve been self conscious my entire life about my stomach but I just had to keep reminding myself that most people don’t care what my stomach looks like because they’re too busy worrying about their own shit than if my stomach jiggles or not!! A big part of recovery for me is recognizing that my inner world and thoughts aren’t those of others. People don’t notice every little thing about me because they have their own lives and insecurities, so I should not let stupid worries stop me from living my life comfortably!!!

I usually do my long runs on my own. It's not that I am antisocial, but I must admit I enjoy my own company. Also, running on my own is a chance to shore up all the various stresses and worries I might have had during the day, and then clear my head and focus on the nature around me.
I did a run at the lovely Richmond Park in South London, where I took in the beautiful autumn colours in the morning sunshine, when this little fellow ran up and joined me.
The little dog had a collar around his neck that said “friendly” which I thought was so cute! He looked up at me and ran alongside, then gradually picked up the speed. I couldn’t keep up with him, so he just ran away!
His owner was apologetic for her dog disturbing me. On the contrary! Mr Friendly Pooch was very welcome to join me, and he brightened up my run. So maybe I am quite happy to run with others - at least dogs anyway!
Running with others is always fun. And that’s what I did with my running club, South London Harriers when we ran at the cross country match in Reigate Priory, Surrey. It wasn’t too muddy, and it was only 4 miles, but it was pretty hilly. This is what I need, though to give my legs the strength for next Spring.
Over the next six months I will be doing quite a lot of running, and will probably need to vary the places where I run so I can stay motivated.
At the moment I’m not doing massive miles, so am happy to run in the streets and trails in my immediate neighbourhood in Crystal Palace.
I call this route the sweetspot as it’s not far from home and has a bit of everything terrainwise. It’s so familiar I can do it with my eyes closed, though I still manage to find something new or different each time.
I look forward to running in lots of places around London and beyond in the near future.
