okay — im really enjoying relistening/reading through episode 111 mostly because it is the perfect episode to come after 110 (Matryoshka)
this episode is shortly after josie has died, and the angels have gotten their right to exist. its also right after cecil explains why he hated steve. those are huge, HUGE, characters in the show wtnv doesn’t kill characters— not important beloved ones i mean — often. josie dying was so unexpected and hard and i think a lot of listeners were so raw and upset by it, and it was written to express that so was the town. and cecil being so honest and raw and open is not common either— especially about someone we were taught to hate for literal years
which is why episode 111 is so perfect and intelligent to me, because it’s pulling the listener through the motions of a typical night vale episode, an episode from perhaps the earlier seasons, and demonstrates what cecils job is for his town in the fiction of the show. he is comforting. when there are great stresses and the community is wavering he is there. and we as the listener experience that with this episode after three HUGE narrative events. it is perfectly nostalgic. the pacing, the wording, what the episode focuses on— how comforting familiarity is. There are new contexts. things are scary and hard but not for the same reasons they used to be.
and this moment with carlos and cecil after the celebration of josies life, where carlos verbalizes how distraught he is at how he’s become accustomed to the town, is just so bittersweet to me. it says so much without saying anything, and says so much about carlos who is so bad at verbally expressing his emotions. especially because later on the episode (screenshot below) carlos points out that cats dont float, to which cecil responds “ this one does” and carlos just quietly smiles…..
like there is something about a scientist whose sole purpose slowly being lost to love and familiarity that is so so so heart breaking and lovely and achey. of saying “this box is detecting something dangerous i didnt know what it was detecting then except it was my way to see you and i dont know what its detecting now so be careful bc i love you i love you i love you”
Ending with cecil explaining what his purpose is only to do it so beautifully the entire episode
and this this is what cecil states in 110 — knowing night vale is strange and staying there anyway, loving there, growing there, is what keeps it alive. knowing its strangeness and finding comfort in it. of carlos at the end of 111 calling a town meeting, telling the town that they’re still interesting, still strange, even to him, is has to be to him….
and of course— now im thinking of current events of the podcast, and how Carlos has grown as a person and as a person in the context of night vale — and how Janet Lubelle wanting to explain away Night Vale is so BAD its so BAD and Carlos should be fucking ANGRY MAN idk idk idk idk idk he has loved the town to the point of reckless protection, to the point of distraught realization, to the point of lovingly wading through the mundane….. ten years of loving night vale, twenty years loving cecil…. my guy should be fucking MAD
