Dream Journal
Bà ngoại This dream explanation requires some backstory. My grandma on my mother's side passed away last year. It was a long time coming. She was well in her 90s (although no one really knew her birthday or her actual age) and could barely remember her own children's names. It's one of those things that happens when you get older and have to accept and move on. But it was still hard. My grandma came with my parents and sister to America before I was born. She lived with my uncle, my mom's older brother. But she often helped babysit my sister and I while my parents were working. She did this cute thing when anyone said "Hi Bà!" She would respond "bốn!" Because 2 & 3 is actually pronounced "hai ba" and she would finish with 4. But as I got older, I developed an attitude and was extremely disrespectful. I think it was mainly because I didn't really speak or understand Vietnamese at all and she didn't understand any English. The language barrier frustrated me. It was also when I realized my grandma and my mom had a difficult relationship and I hated my grandma for it. Even my father grew annoyed at my grandma's antics. This was before I understood how Asians tend to value sons more than their daughters. Eventually she never visited again. It wasn't until she got more sick did I realize I was such a terrible child to her. It didn't seem to matter anymore because she didn't remember me. But I felt like that made me even worse as a person. In my dream, I was taking a nap and was woken up by my grandma. I asked what was wrong and she just replied, "Hungry" in English. It was strange and it wasn't her voice. She then followed up with, "Pizza?" It was pretty cute. She proceeded to walk away from me to go find pizza I guess. I followed her into a kitchen and she handed me a slice of bread and tried to spread tomato sauce on it. I laughed and said wait. I ordered a pizza for us to eat together instead. I don't know what happened after that. She disappeared and the dream shifted but in the dream I was so upset that she was gone and was trying desperately to find her again. I woke up a little while later with pangs of sadness.
