The rod ends from Formula Group T, made bij selective laser melting, together with LayerWise
Racecar parts
Students from the Belgium Formula Group T have used additive manufacturing (or 3D printing as you wish) to build some parts for their racecar. Due to this they have reduced the weight of the rod ends and the uprights of the suspension system by half. The students used the technology of ARCAM for printing titanium parts and selective laser melting for the rod ends. See more about this and other 3D printing news.
Is this the future for hot dog sellers in NYC? Belgium designers of Unfold think maybe people with this 3d printer build on a bike will go to the people at home for PRINTING parts they need now. Like the milkman used to visit my moms home in earlier years. Look for more at The Machine an exhibition in Genk in Belgium.
EADS: print your aluminum aircraft
EADS Innovation Works is going to build a aluminum drone with Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS). At Farnborough Airshow the aircraft manufacturer already shows a plastic version that is printed. This technology offers opportunities to optimize the design.
Wingspan 1.5 meters
The portable unmanned aircraft has a wingspan of 1.5 meters, uses batteries as an energy source and can for example be used for rescue or surveillance flights in areas affected by a disaster. Students of the University of Leeds have developed the drone together with the EADS developed. The wings are detachable so that the unmanned aircraft can be better transported.
Weight savings
The British branch of EADS, plans tot take the drone actual in production and is going tot manufacture it of ScalmalloyRP, an aluminum die casting alloy whose property rights are at EADS. ScalmalloyRP has good mechanical properties and is suitable for complex shaped parts. Compared with a conventionally machined part, there is a weight saving of 65 percent, while the wings is just as strong.
There is an English spoken summary off the article on the website.

Last two days I've been at RapidPro, the 3D printing fair in The Netherlands, which attracted this year more then 2000 visitors in only two days. A lot of nice stuff to see and interesting presentations.
This is really an awesome application of 3d printing. Hope to see these guys in two weeks at RapidPro, a Dutch 3d Printing exhibitions.
