I get A TON of questions asking about what bullet journals are, how I use mine, how to set them up, what to use with them, yadda, yadda, yadda. SOO I decided to save myself a few asks & maybe save some of you from having to ask! So without further comments, here is my guide to Bullet Journals!!
Haley, what is a bullet journal?
Well unnamed anonymous asker, a bullet journal is like a big, customizable mash-up of a planner, diary, journal, to-do list, and notebook. You can add whatever you want to it and make it however you want. So yeah you could argue that every notebook of lists and thoughts is a bullet journal, BBUUTTT bullet journals have a few things that make them qualified to be titled ‘bullet’ journals.
What am I supposed to write in this thing?
ANYTHING! Typically people use them exactly how you would use a planner, but they just add some pizzaz to make them aesthetically pleasing and individual to them!
BUT REALLY, what am I putting in this thing?
You should start off with a key so that you know what the symbols/colors that you choose to use mean. I use boxes for almost everything. A shaded box means that my task is complete, a box half shaded means that my task is in progress, an x through it means that it is irrelevant, and an arrow next to it/in it means that I have moved the task to another day. Simple as that. You can choose to add colors based on classes and extracurriculars but mine is simply black for everything. Other people add indexes for what’s on each page so they don’t have to blindly flip through looking for a specific thing. That is smart BUT i don’t use on so really ya don’t need one. NOW……
Start your journal! Add a week entry or draw out a monthly calendar! Do whatever your creative/uncreative heart desires. look though the tags: bujo, bullet journal, and my bullet journal, YOU WILL BE FILLED WITH INSPIRATION!
How can I start the journal without supplies?
Go to Target or Michaels and STOCK UP! All you really need is a notebook and a pen. The other stuff is just for fun and looking all cute. I like adding washi tape, stickers, post it notes, and colorful pens to spice up my layouts! Here are a few things that I use!
MT Washi Tape
Cat page markers
Bali Post it notes
Pastel Pilot Juice Pens
Wait, what about the journal itself?
I use a moleskine squared notebook because I like that the boxes I am drawing area ALREADY THERE!!! Most people choose brands like moleskine, piccadilly, leuchttrum, or muji for there notebook but any bound stack of papers will work!
Any other helpful tips?
Make it yours! The purpose isn’t to be cutesy and artistic BUT if that’s what you want, go for it man. You are in charge and can spend as little or as much time as you want on it! You can constantly switch things up or keep it the same for years. It is relaxing and fun and personally, I love decorating my bujo. It’s like a close friend who organizes my life. Make sure the system you use is user friendly: don’t use 30 colors and a million symbols if you are not going to remember what they mean! Once you have created your masterpiece, don’t be afraid of showing it off on your blog ! I love seeing others spreads and ideas! I hope this helped some of you!
