“The 2017 Whitney Biennial Is the Most Politically Charged”
Recently, the Whitney Biennial just opened for exhibition and nobody is talking about the controversial aspects of it. Instead wh*te reviewers want to call it the “most politically charged show”, which to my thinking, is false. This is because of the paintings especially by Dana Schutz. Schutz has done an oil painting Emmet Till. As a white woman artist, there isn’t really any intention behind why she has done this painting and the painting falls into spectacularization of black death inside of an incredibly white institution and white gazes. Henry Taylor also falls victim to his painting depicting Philando Castile and providing these paintings of black death to then cause the show to be “more politically charged” is terrible.
In response, at the Whitney, a protest against Dana Schutz' painting of Emmett Till: "She has nothing to say to the Black community about Black trauma."
