Hi @asteralley , I’m a fellow DCMK fan here, WELCOME TO VIETNAM, I hope you enjoy your stay!
Well, I totally understand that no foreigners would know about this, but in Vietnam, DCMK plays a really important part in almost every single person’s childhood, not only young children but adults have read or heard the name “Thám tử lừng danh Conan” at least once. The manga has become extremely popular since the first time appeared in Vietnam a long side Doraemon and Dragon Ball (around the year 2000) with a not-so-good unofficial illegal translation and our official Vietnamese fandom was formed and continued to grow in 2008 when Kim Dong Publishing House decided to licensed this manga for publication in Vietnamese
This is the official edition of ours
Nowadays, almost every bookstore sells Conan, and if you visit antiques shops or old bookstores that sell books from the 20th century, you might be able to find older versions of the manga that you’ve never seen before
The old versions and translations
So we DCMK V-fans now have offline fan events each and every year on Conan’s movie premiere week, DCMK-only online shops, a Vietnamese-only Conan boardgame, character collections (ShinRan, FBI, Kaitou KID, Black Organization, Zero), Kudo Shinichi’s Novels/Zero’s tea time/Magic Kaito/The Culprit Hanzawa/Secret Archieves/Movie-to-comic Vietnamese translations and this end of summer, Kim Dong has also licensed the 100th volume anniversary for publication in Vietnamese
There will be limited editions and yes, we will have to go to bookstores to camp at 3am lol
The only thing that might be the reason why no one knows that DCMK is popular in our country is that we don’t have much fanarts or fanfics, and most of the artists and writers I know often hide their nationality
Oh and one more thing, if you happened to stay in Ho Chi Minh City until August, you should probably consider checking out the Color Fiesta: Origins. It’s kinda like a convention for artists and you can definitely find high quality dcmk merchs and other fandoms there (a little warning it’s going to be very crowded)
Anyway, I hope this post has helped you and others to know a little more about our V-franchise. Have fun with your vacation and I’m extremely sorry if I have made any grammar mistakes, I’m not so good at this subject 🥹
