'A Brush with Now' exhibit by the fantastic Merlin Porter Arts is now up in our Oxford space, and will be running until 18th December.

Capturing the buzz of the moment in paint, live at music events in Oxford and festivals in the UK, Merlin Porter Arts is now exhibiting some of his favourite events art at the Oxford Hatch.

Paintings include great local music moments from gigs such as Oxjam Oxford Takeover, Sofar Sounds Oxford, Tandem Festival, The Catweazle Club Bday at Holywell and loads more, plus a few panoramic paintings from the lovely 10th End Of The Road Festival.

Merlin specialises in painting live at all sorts of events from concerts to wedding ceremonies. He also paints more traditional commissions and illustrations when he's not out and about capturing the moment on a canvas.

Sofar Sounds Oxford visits the Hatch

Earlier this week Hatch Oxford was visited by the wonderful Sofar Sounds Oxford who hosted a magical evening with live music from Lowpines, Esther Joy Lane, Liu Bei and Little Brother Eli. Read a summary of the event from Cool Music And Things here.

Who’s In The Hatch?

Who are they? Made with Joy is a social enterprise with a dual purpose. They build websites for charities, non profits and social enterprise AND while doing it, they train and provide work to youth with no work experience and adults who have been out of work for an extended period of time.

How are they using the Hatch? "The Hatch has been an AMAZING space for Made with Joy because we have plenty of space for an ever growing team. At any one point, we might have up to 7 people working together on Made with Joy projects, having the flexibility that the Hatch offers is such an advantage. Another thing we have benefited from is not having to pay rent. We are able to bill our clients less per hour because we don't have a monthly lease to worry about. Another major bonus of the Hatch is the collaboration that comes out of it. We've enjoyed taking on new clients just by the very nature of being in the same space. What have they been working on? The team are currently expanding to provide WordPress service and maintenance packages to help people keep their websites safe from hackers and up to date with the latest web design trends. They also have several new websites launching in the coming months which the team has been working on for a long time.

What's next! Made with Joy is involved in two major upcoming projects. The first is called TechPixies which is largely funded by the Government Equalities Office and Better Broadband for Oxfordshire via the Oxfordshire County Council. TechPixies is looking to get 10 women in Oxfordshire back into work via Digital Marketing. Made with Joy are still looking for 10 charities and businesses to participate as sponsors for the women.

The other project Made with Joy is involved with is called OneDay Training. Made with Joy developers will teach a series of one day WordPress website builds and one day digital marketing courses partly funded by Oxfordshire Business Support.

Who’s In The Hatch?

Cultivate is a co-operative social enterprise owned by the community and dedicated to promoting and selling sustainable and local food in and around Oxford. Cultivate believe that strengthening our local food system also empowers our communities, increases the resilience of our local economy, protects our natural environment, promotes health and wellbeing and enriches our culture. Cultivate sell their produce across Oxfordshire at Farmers Markets and on the VegVan,which is a mobile shop packed full of seasonal produce and other local treats. The VegVan even stops outside the Hatch, every Friday from 12-3:30pm so be sure to keep an eye out for them. To compliment their work across Oxfordshire, Cultivate have been using the Hatch as their base for meeting and planning since the space opened earlier in the year. Cultivate are aCommunity Action Group network member and they have also successfully collaborated with other Hatch users such as Good Food Oxford, Tandem Festival and Made with Joy. Cultivate’s latest activity includes their new Harvest Taste Tour. During autumn, you will not only find a cornucopia of delicious local produce at the Cultivate VegVan and Farmers market, but Cultivate are also providing inspiration in the kitchen with their taste of the week and recipe of the week. Cultivate will also be giving you an inside look at the people behind the food. The Oxford Food Surplus Cafe team have been planning away at the Hatch and are ready to bring their latest restaurant to East Oxford Community Centre on Saturday 31st October from 12-3pm for a spooky Halloween special!

Join the Tandem Festival team for the trial session in a potential series of Tandem Yoga sessions at the Oxford Hatch. The weekly Tuesday sessions will be trialled on Tuesday 27th October and will run from 7.30-8.30am and is for all levels. You must bring your own mat. Earlier this week we hosted a tea and chocolate event run by Georgette's Deli, a local food start-up business who the bring made-to-order gourmet cheeseboard meals and luxury handmade Belgian chocolates to Oxfordshire.

It sounds like it was a wonderful (and delicious) evening so keep an eye out for future events.

Cultivate, one of the Hatch’s regular users, are currently running a Harvest Taste Tour, to celebrate the explosion of good food and they can’t wait to share it with everyone. 

Every week at their VegVan and Farmers market, you'll find a cornucopia of delicious local produce. Here you'll find inspiration in the kitchen with their taste of the week and recipe of the week. They’ll also be giving you an inside look at the people behind the food. Make sure you check out their calendar as well, where you'll find all the dates and locations for harvest celebrations across Oxfordshire.

Today they’re outside the Hatch, on Little Clarendon Street, until 6pm today (Friday) with delicious homemade cornbread tasters to celebrate their taste of the week - sweetcorn!

Justice in Motion are going to Macedonia to research human trafficking

Hatch users Justice in Motion are currently running their first ever Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for our forthcoming research trip to Skopje, Macedonia. They're going to be meeting the local people to gather their stories of human trafficking, and record their accounts through photos, videos and blogs which they'll use to redevelop their 2013 show, Bound. This is a really important social issue, and one that spreads far beyond the community in Shutka. They've been sharing stories and news about human trafficking across the world on Facebook and Twitter, such as this emotional account of how one woman saved her daughter from being trafficked. New course: What did the planning system ever do for us?

A course of 6  x  two hour sessions (Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm, starting 21 October) at The Hatch, Little Clarendon St, Oxford  - run by Daniel Scharf MRTPI in collaboration with the Community Action Group project.  The course will be free but limited in numbers and commitment to most if not all of the course will be expected.

Daniel has had forty years experience working in the public, private and voluntary sectors and has run similar courses for the Oxford University Department of Continuing Education.  Some background to the course can be found at www.dantheplan.blogspot.com

The format each week will be an introduction to the subject followed by group discussions and short exercises.  The purpose of the course is to encourage people to become more active and effective in their engagement with the planning system  (both locally and nationally).  The class will discuss recent examples of planning cases and, in particular, will concentrate on the principle of ‘sustainable development’ and how this is and should be applied in plan-making and decision-taking.

21 Oct -  Introduction to the planning system; the underlying law, the formulation and application of policy and its administration – including the role of the ‘public’.

28 Oct – The NPPF, NPPG, Local Plans, Neighbourhood Plans and written ministerial statements.

4 Nov - Meeting housing needs; assessing the need for new housing of different types and tenures and how these could be met nationally and locally through, new settlements (inc garden cities), urban expansion and ‘intensification’.

11 Nov – Exploring the relationship between land uses and transport and how to plan for a low carbon transport system.

18 Nov – The countryside; green belts, AONBs and the production of food and energy.

25 Nov – Resume.  A discussion about engagement with the planning system and addressing the question of what it has achieved in the past and whether it can deliver a sustainable future.

The Real Farming Trust’s ‘Oxford Real Farming Conference 2016′: Tickets on sale now

The 7th annual Oxford Real Farming Conference returns to Oxford Town Hall on 6th & 7th January 2016, and tickets are on sale now. 2015 was the biggest gathering yet of this unique event, which brings together individuals and organisations from across UK and international food and farming. From the biology of soil, to access to land for young farmers, attendees came together to discuss common solutions to the challenges facing our food system.

The team who brought Tandem Festival to Oxfordshire are back with a new monthly event - Tandem Sundays will provide an interesting workshop, followed by an evening of intimate hand-picked music - all in a magical barn at the Hill End Centre.

Who’s In The Hatch?

The Community Action Group (CAG) network consists of over 60 groups across Oxfordshire at the forefront of community led climate change action, organising events and projects to take action on issues including waste, transport, food, energy and biodiversity. The network runs over 1,400 events per year, attended by over 60,000 local residents.

CAG project staff offer hands-on, day to day help and advice for groups, and help the network to grow. You might recognise many of the groups from the Hatch, including local food co-operative Cultivate Oxford, eco-music project Tandem Festival and the new Oxford Food Surplus Cafe.

Their latest activity involves organising their third annual skill share in collaboration withAgile Ox. The skill share will have three themes: community, social enterprise and new technology and research. Contact Peter to find out more.

The team are currently using Hatch Oxford to develop the strategy for the next three years of the project, building on what is the largest network of its kind in the UK and creating a blueprint for community action everywhere.

Just Growth is a new funding programme designed to encourage the growth of community based food and farming projects. Its aim is to support social enterprises that are producing food in a environmentally and socially just way. The programme will be looking for up to 14 projects to fund and support over an 18 month period to December 2016. The projects must be based in England, Scotland or Wales. Find out more.
