What a difference 50 years makes top Volvo 164E, 1968 (1970 version shown) and Volvo S90 T6, 2018. The 164 created the template for a large, luxurious Volvo saloon that has remained in place through 6 generations. During the 70s and 80s many European brands competed in the Executive market, Alfa Romeo (Alfa 6/164), Audi (100/200), BMW (5-series), Citroën (CX), Fiat (130), Ford (Granada/Scorpio), Lancia (Gamma/Thema), Mercedes-Benz (W123/124), Opel/Vauxhall (Senator), Peugeot (604/605), Renault (30/25), Saab (900/9000) and (briefly) Talbot (Tagora). Its says something about Volvo’s resilience that, apart from the most prestigious German manufacturers (Audi, BMW and Mercedes) all of the others have either withdrawn from the executive market or gone out of business completely.
