This Much I Know Is True
Fic By: KOranges (aka ChettaWritesStuff on tumblr) Art By: valecitadraws & angstassart
Word Count:Â 63389 Fic Rating: Not Rated Summary:Â When the nurse walked in with Buckyâs visitor, he didnât even have to fake his amnesia. Because heâd literally never seen the man before in his life. And he had the type of face that Bucky tended to remember. But that didnât stop the blonde man from gasping like an overly dramatic teenager and pulling Bucky into a tight hug.âThis is him,â the man told the nurse, his eyes welling with tears. Bucky gaped at him. âThis is my husband.âBucky could practically watch his carefully constructed plan crumble around him. Still, he tried. âI donât know him.ââItâs okay, honey,â the nurse cooed at him. âWe know you donât remember.â
Steve had his reasons for comitting a felony second degree kidnapping. For one, the guy was an asshole. Like, Grade-A-Probably-Has-Kicked-A-Puppy-At-Some-Point asshole. And second, the guy was going to sit in some backwater mental hospital if Steve didnât take him in. And thirdlyâŚ.well, Steve was desperate.

Writing Deaf Characters | Speech is Speech
Before I get going, Iâm 75% deaf, as some of you know, semi-reliant on hearing aids and lip reading. My first languages were Makaton sign and then BSL. I now use spoken English.
There are a lot of issues I find with how deaf people are represented in books, when represented at all. I would love to see more deaf and hard of hearing characters in the books I read- without having to read books specifically about deaf/HoH people- but when I find them, theyâre grossly undercharacterized or stereotyped. Authors write them in a way that sets signing language characters apart from speaking characters as if they are inferior, and this makes my blood boil.
Some technicalties
Iâll keep this brief.
You may have heard that âdeafâ is a slur and you should use âhearing impairedâ. Donât. Iâve never met a deaf or hard of hearing person who believed that. Use deaf for people who are deaf, and Hard of Hearing (HoH) for people who lack hearing. These can be interchangeable depending on the person. This is why sensitivity readers are a useful part of the beta process.
Sign language is incredibly varied. It developes in the same way as spoken language. Fun fact: in BSL there are at least half a dozen ways to say bullshit, my favourite of which is laying your arms across one another with one hand making a bullâs head sign and the other hand going flat, like a cowpat. Itâs beautifully crude, and the face makes the exclamation mark. Wonderful.
There are different sign languages. Knowing more than one would make a character multi or bi-lingual, even if they are non-speaking.
Makaton is basic sign language used by children, and it mirrors the very simple language used by toddlers.
Yes, we swear and talk shit about people around us in sign language sometimes, and no, it isnât disrespectful to have signing characters do this. Just remember that we also say nice things, and random things, and talk about fandoms and TV shows and what weâre having for dinner, too.
Each signed language is different from another. ASL and BSL? Nothing alike. Just google the two different signs for horse.
Remember that sign language is a language, equal to the spoken word
Therefore, treat it as such. Use quotation speech marks and dialogue tags. You only need to explicitly state that this character uses signed language once, and then let your modifiers and description do the rest. Â It isnât a form of âsub-speech" or âmaking hand actionsâ- sign language is a language all on its own: it has its own grammar rules, syntactical structures, punctuation, patterns, idioms and colloquialisms. For example, âwhat is your name?â becomes âYour name what?â with the facial expression forming punctuation in the same way that spoken English uses alterations of prosodic tone (inflections). There is even pidgin sign; a language phenomenon usually associated with spoken language.
In the same way that you would describe a spoken-English characterâs tone of voice, you would describe a signed-English speakerâs facial expressions and the way that they sign- keeping in mind that these things are our languageâs equivalent of verbal inflection.
So please, none of that use of âspecial speech marksâ or italicised speech for sign. If your viewpoint character doesnât understand signed speech, then you take the same approach that would be used for any other language they donât understand, like French or Thai. E.g âHe said something in rapid sign language, face wrinkling in obvious disgust.â is a good way of conveying this. The proof that youâve done this well is in whether or not you can switch âsign languageâ for French or something else, and it would read the same.
Donât be afraid to describe how things are said, either. Sign language is such a beautiful and expressive way of talking, and to see a writer do it justice would be truly fabulous. Putting this into practise:
âOh, I love maths!â She said, fingers sharp and wide with sarcasm. She raised her eyebrows.
âIâm sorry.â He replied and made his face small, but could not keep the grin forming. She was starting to laugh, too.
This is part one of two, for the sake of readability and keeping the information simple as I can. Part two- writing the deaf characters themselves- is coming up over the weekend. See you then and best luck with your writing until that point :D
This is part of my weekly advice theme. Each week I look at what youâve asked me to help with, and write a post or series of posts for it. Next week: settings and character development (including heroes, anti-heroes, villains, and every other kind of character).
Thank you, this is wonderful and helpful.

Write Your Novel In A Year â Week 1: Start Strong, Start Simple
by Anthony Ehlers
Anthony Ehlers invites you to join him as he helps authors write a novel in a year. Through a series of inspirational, useful posts, he aims to get you to start and finish a book.
Goal setting
Go through your rough and raw ideas of your imagination
Choose an idea that you can live with â and love
Commit to that idea for 52 weeks
Breaking it down
The imagination room
Where do you keep your ideas for stories? Maybe you have the scratched on pieces of paper in a box, scribbled in a notebook, or in a file on your smartphone or Mac. Maybe, just maybe, you have it lurking somewhere in your imagination like something you can almost see from the corner of your eye â and if you turn your head really fast, itâll be gone. If youâre lucky, maybe you already know what story you want to tell.
For years, Iâve kept notebooks where I jot down ideas for stories â random thoughts, thumbnail synopses, little character portraits, and inciting incidents that could spark a story. Sometimes I have just a title I like but with no story to go with it. Donât you hate it when that happens?
I like to think of this book as my imagination room and everyone and everything is welcome. From vampires to small-town farm girls, from big Hollywood plots to quiet little stories, I write it all down without judging it or over analysing it. Â Some ideas are silly; others are exciting or at least have the possibility of being exciting. Â But theyâre all there â like a bag of Liquorice All Sorts or a bar filled with cocktail mixes. Iâm glad Iâve kept this book next to my bedside. If you havenât started a notebook like this, it might be a good idea to start one and fill it up as you go along.
Picking a puppy â or a cat
I have friend who owns a Cornish Rex, a sinuous, beautiful, hairless breed of cat. He loves cats but is allergic to them so this is the only breed he can have around. Itâs the same with choosing a novel as your project â it has to be a project that you can live with for a whole year. More than that, it has to be something you can love for a lifetime. (In fact, I think Iâll have a Cornish Rex somewhere in my novel. Why not?)
What kinds of characters fascinate you? Iâm drawn to obsessive characters living compromised lives â dark or funny stories, or both. I like beautiful but broken characters. Driven by their desperate desires or haunted by secret dreams. The characters that fascinate me have a psychology behind their sexuality; itâs tied up with their identity or lack of identity.
If I look at the stories Iâve published, most revolve around three themes: sexuality, obsession, identity. And I used this as a filter for the ideas in my notebook â because I knew stories with these elements would excite me and (hopefully) keep me excited about a project for the whole year. I finally found one through process of elimination. Have you found yours?
Find the thread â and keep your place
Basically, itâs the story of an engaged couple who decide they need some excitement in their relationship. They pick up a young man at a
club and invite him back to their apartment for a threesome â not knowing that behind his placid and beautiful exterior lies an unbalanced personality. This one impulsive invitation causes their seemingly perfect existence to unravel.
Thatâs all I know about the story. Itâs not a clear and complete formed novel â itâs just a sliver. Itâs a thread. Itâs a start, thatâs all I need for now, and perhaps itâs all you need to start for now too. Just make sure itâs as clear and interesting as you can make it right now.
On a December night in the middle of a heat wave in Johannesburg, I was wrapping presents for my nephew. I was struggling to find the beginning of a roll of sticky tape. In the heat, I was irritable and was about to give up â but I finally found the seam and made damn sure I didnât lose the start by folding over the end the tape to keep it from sticking down again. Itâs the same with my story. You can only do it one strip at a time; the most important thing is to find the beginning.
For this project, Iâve taken a simple manila folder and kept all my notes for it inside. This will make sure I donât have to hunt for my notes when Iâm writing. Where will you keep all your notes?
Timelock â 60 Minutes
To find an idea for my novel, I set myself a time limit of an hour before bedtime.
5 Quick hacks
Write down 10 ideas for a novel on a sheet of paper. Scratch out every option that doesnât excite you. If youâre left with two or three, toss them in a hat â and choose one.
Keep a small notebook at your desk or your bag â jot down further ideas during the day.
Let go of your perfectionism or procrastination â you have to knit some bad sweaters before you design that award-winning designer gown.
Read a few passages of your favourite novel or a book on writing to inspire you â there are also some great clips on YouTube.
Put up a calendar behind your door and mark each day you work on your novel.
by Anthony Ehlers
Pin it, quote it, believe it:

The one before that had been artifacts from some famous Russian spy. But Natasha knew his weak spots. She had sent him pictures of starving children to get him here and promised a sophisticated dinner party. So now he was here. And he didn't sense the trap snapping shut until it was already too late to escape.
