Lian: Hi hello everyone good morning/afternoon/evening welcome to PODCAST, this is your host Lian and our episode for today is “Media Medicine.” The topic we’ll be talking about is writing new media.
Moving on, this is some quite interesting but not that interesting podcast. I’ll be interviewing myself. An interview about the journey I had with writing new media course. Please welcome our guest, and introduce yourself to our listeners.
Mads: Hi everyone, I am Madeleine, now in my 2nd year and almost on my 3rd. this is quite a different type of podcast because I'm switching with a 1st yr Mads and the Mads Mads now.
Lian: Wow thanks me for that wonderful introduction. Give yourself a pat on the shoulder.
Anyway, let’s not make this long. We're here to answer some questions regarding some specific stuff that Mads experienced throughout the course of writing new media, a general education course/subject for 2nd-year BMMA students.
So, Mads, how was your journey in taking the course?
Mads: Well, it’s a mix of emotions because sometimes it's fun, sometimes it's dreadful. When the semester started, we had no instructor for this subject, not even a substitute. It was hard because we’re paying to learn yet no one teaches.
Lian: you’re not getting what you paid for.
Mads: Exactly, we managed to have one after a month or two. It was nothing new because the same thing happened last semester with some of our subjects and we already knew what to expect, however, it was not what we expected. We have to catch up with the lessons from prelims while it's already in the middle of midterms.
Lian: So, if your subject was late, how did your schedule arrangements look like?
Mads: Oh, we had a bit of a complaint about that. You see, we have to adapt to the changes in the schedule. Since we started late, we had to match the class schedule with the availability of the instructor so, when we chose this section there was no late-night schedule compared to other sections, but it changed, and writing new media starts at 5:30 PM up to 7 PM every Tuesday and Friday.
Lian: Hassle schedule. You’re until 7 PM every Tuesday then you have a 7 AM class every Wednesday. I can imagine the lack of sleep.
Mads: Yeah, looking forward to getting a good night's sleep this break tho.
Lian: I hope so too. In your subject, What do you usually? Do you just write? You hate writing.
Mads: I don’t hate, I only dislike writing for “I don’t know what” reason. And not because its called writing means we just write. We had a lot of valuable discussions and lessons.
Lian: Oh, what are some of your memorable experiences related to the course?
Mads: Probably the vlog project. It’s by group so it’s much easier. We get to eat since we’re showing off some delicacies in our locality or what to do in our country.
Lian: What did you guys showcase in your vlog?
Mads: We went to one of the oldest bakeshops in San Mateo Rizal. We have to post our vlog online to see its algorithm and observe the audience interaction with videos as a medium for new media
Lian: Was the result good?
Mads: Yes, we garnered quite a lot of viewers and people also shared their experience with the food.
Lian: Did the good result teach a lesson for you? There must be because you said it's memorable.
Mads: Yes, it did. People now prefer watching than reading and they mostly watch short and entertaining videos. I think the reason for this is that social media is commonly used for entertainment so, people would take an interest in those things as entertainment.
Lian: That’s true, with applications such as TikTok is a big factor for that.
Moving on, well I didn’t prepare that many questions as I know you might be busy with finals and all. So, throughout our conversation, I’d say you learned quite a lot. As an application of what you have learned, have you thought of anything you can contribute to new media that you can share with us?
Mads: None. JK. We can fight off fake news by sharing information with reliable sources, fact-checking, and verification. I can share information on how to avoid frequent encounters with fake news and cybercriminals. I cannot remove every fake news online but lending a helping hand in navigating and filtering the information we absorb is a big help. Through this, it can further explain and easily understand how powerful new media can be.
Lian: Wow that’s actually a really good one. I hope you have all the resources and energy to do such a kind act.
So, to end this PODCAST, thank you Mads for coming, we totally appreciate your time doing this podcast. We’ve greatly learned a lot and I hope my listeners too.
Mads: Thank you for having me here too. Invite me again next time.
Lian: I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or sincere…
Mads: Uhm whichever you prefer I think??
Lian: Thought so. And here ends our “PODCAST.” We had such a lovely interview with me. This is your podcast host Lian, and leaving you a message of…“HAPPY FRIDAY”
