I cried several times during this speech, but no harder than at this moment. As “progressive” as I am, I took Barack for granted while he was my president. He was not perfect, as no leader ever could be, but he cared. I take things like gay marriage rights for granted because they seem like rights we always had. But we didn’t always have those rights. These are new rights. Barack made America feel like a place where equal rights were a no brainer. Barack made me feel safe. Barack made me feel proud. Barack made me, as an average white man, feel humble. When I watched Barack speak tonight, I wept because I am heart broken to see him go, but more so because I under appreciated him while he served. I don’t agree with every drone strike he ever ordered, but I cannot dispute that he was wholeheartedly an American. An American who wanted the best for every other American. He was a president for all of us. I am honored to have lived in a time when we had a leader that I was proud to call my president. I am grateful to have been a citizen during the Obama years. Barack made me feel proud to be an American again. Regardless of who our future presidents are, he and his family are people I will always look to as symbols of the American dream. People that will inspire, people I can trust, people I can believe in. Thank you, President Obama.
