please vote. every 4 years you get this chance... this chance to determine who you would prefer to see in the highest chair of the govt. yes, you might not like either candidate that is available, however, aside from a “likeness” factor, it’s also important determine who you think is best fit to hold the position as President.
In my personal opinion, I think there is a clear answer as to who is more fit for the job. You may disagree with me. You may believe that the other person/thing is more fit. If so, vote accordingly. Exercise your right. By not doing so, you’re potentially allowing other people make that decision for you.
You may come from the camp of “Well, nothing is going to change anyway,” or even “I’m only one person so my one vote isn’t going to make a difference.” Here’s the issue I have with those schools of thought: yes, it’s highly unlikely that election is going to come down to one single vote, however, there’s this little thing called the diffusion of responsibility (shout out PSY 101).
Diffusion of Responsibility is a psychological phenomenon in which people are less likely to take action or feel a sense of responsibility in the presence of a large group of people
So, if one million people decide their one vote isn’t going to make a difference, that will probably make a difference! I’m sure you’ve heard this argument before.
What I’d like to highlight instead, though, is how the result of the election could affect other people even if it rarely affects you. You may slightly notice a change in the taxes that appear on your paycheck (if you even look at them), and you may complain about it occasionally. For those less fortunate, this could make a world of a difference. Additionally, you may have excellent job security so the issue regarding immigration may never directly affect you, however, this will have a tremendous effect to others who are more vulnerable to change no matter which side you tend to lean on the issue.
My point being is this: if you don’t think this election will change anything because it doesn’t directly affect you, take one moment and think to what degree it can affect your fellow Americans.
