DERRY GIRLS - 2.04
do you have any shauzia headcanons? :o
ooo i actually do!! though, i wouldn’t say i have a lot cause i surprisingly like to keep as close as canon as possible when it comes to characterization but…..whatever!!
would definitely enjoy movies & shows in the psychological thriller/horror/drama category, as well as comedy. (only actual example i can give rn would be yellowjackets. that would def be up her alley and she would be a shauna shipman defender! i am calling it!!)
pretty intelligent but doesn’t talk about it at all. would be one of those classmates who would get some of the highest marks but brushes it off when anyone mentions it; not out of embarrassment or ego, but simply because no one ever cared about her achievements, so she just got used to it.
would be that one friend who takes the longest getting ready
i try not to diagnose any fictional character with any disorders cause i do always want to be respectful and accurate when it comes to representation, but i really do think she would have cptsd. she faces long-term trauma (quite literally extending for her entire life) and because of it, she becomes incredibly closed off, aggressive, impulsive, and has huge difficulties with relationships. (there isn’t much about her having flashbacks or nightmares about past trauma in canon, but i dont think it would be far-fetched to believe she does). since cptsd and bpd are seen to interlink with one another, ive always questioned if she could have bpd too, but ive decided against it for right now since im unsure.
on a more lighter note, i feel like if she were to ever go to university, she would major in business. i think she would have a knack for the humanities and arts, but would convince herself that she’s just more well-suited for the business industry. would probably work in marketing or sales.

Well, being a Derry Girl... it's a fucking state of mind.
The Derry Girls in Derry Girls (2018—2022)
i actually like, really like the way parvana and shauzia are characterized so easily through the way they interact with the storyworld. parvana, at first, tries to make sulayman go on his adventure alone; he’s cold and scared and desperate. it isn’t until when shauzia interjects with the old horse that it lightens up a bit, but then immediately goes back to this feeling of isolation when parvana decides to make sulayman get thrown into the well.
but what is incredibly interesting is that once sulayman is in the well, parvana and shauzia’s ideas and mannerisms switch up. to me, this is a point on how people like to view parvana and shauzia on the surface level (characterized by the actual upper surface of the terrain sulayman was on, and what happened there) versus the actual depths of their characters (characterized by the pit of the well, and what happened there). on the surface, parvana is usually chalked up as isolative, withdrawn, even grumpy; shauzia is viewed as the “ball of sunshine”, energetic and outgoing.
when sulayman is in the well, it’s shauzia who decides that he is stuck there with no help; the individuals who are around him (the horse and the skeletons) are rendered unhelpful, indifferent to his predicament. it’s parvana who decides that, contrary to shauzia’s belief, the horse helps him get out of the well, and the skeletons give him the emeralds he needs. it’s shauzia who, with such scorn in her voice, decides that the round man refuses to give sulayman food, and instead throws a net on him (quite literally entrapping him for a moment). and it’s parvana who decides that for his actions, the man deserves to be haunted by the skeletons; that justice will somehow always prevail and community will thrive one way or another.
i think that when people talk about parvana and shauzia, it’s mostly through the façades (or rather, the rare parts of themselves) that they show. we have to keep in mind that they are always the exception to one another; that they are foils to one another. so i find it interesting that parvana—someone who prioritizes community and family, who is actually the one that consistently makes such a huge and genuine impact on others throughout the series—is viewed as cynical or aloof. that shauzia—someone who makes active decisions to isolate herself from the rest of society, who is almost apathetic at the way others are treated, simply cause no one ever cared about how she was treated—is seen as amiable or even selfless. and, like, obviously, there is so much more to the both of them; they are both incredibly nuanced and contradictory characters, and we should treat them as such. but i just find it crazy interesting. maybe im just crazy.
and yes, i do think the most cutest moment in derry girls is michelle intensely watching orla’s talent show performance with such fondness in her eyes
okay hey guys it is the infamous 44del here…….ive been busy w college recently and feel so bad for rarely posting on here 😭 if u guys have any breadwinner questions/asks/whatever, send them to my inbox!! been itching to write some analysis’ but they take time, so if u just wanna chat about this movie in my inbox then i would be happy to answer lol
Shauzia being the coolest girl in the world
also i think i should clear this up: idrees is not 14?? i have no idea where that started but he is 17/18. in the casting call, he and soraya are both listed as “late teens” (and we see in both the novel and screenplay that soraya’s age is 17). please stop spreading misinformation!!
They are matching eyes and clothes colors btw
I just love her sm
one day when ur 12 years old you will listen to an album that you associate with your favorite character solely based off of vibes. you will then re-listen to it when ur 19 and realize you were completely right.
today is my birthday and i wanted to do something like. “productive” for myself. like do another little analysis but i instead did nothing all day (with the exception of finishing up work for the semester) and then deciding, right before i want to go to sleep, to doodle a tiny bit. all you are getting is This. #WhoDaFuckIsThis
one of my most favorite traits (if not the favorite) of parvana is her selfishness. yes, selfishness. it’s so easy to look at her and just chalk her up as: caring, kind, observant, selfless. but humans are not so simple to define, and neither is parvana alizai! her selflessness is selfish! she spends her whole life intertwining her worth and ego with how helpful she is (see: one more mountain). and whenever she gets any chance to slow down, to take a break, to set boundaries for herself, she doesn’t. she keeps on going and going cause that’s all she knows how to do. her character bio literally states that, “she wants to learn, but on her terms and only what interests her in the moment,” and also, “she is here to touch, to break and to rebuild.” there’s a part of parvana that has always prioritized her own feelings before everyone else’s! when she’s upset at her family, she just leaves. (see: the scene in the movie where soraya and fattema argue against parvana going to the prison). when she doesn’t feel needed, she immediately makes it about herself, rather than trying to conceptualize why is it that she is not needed. (see: the scene in parvana’s journey in which asif is cleaning leila’s wounds, and outright tells her that she doesn’t need to help them, because she doesn’t!). when she needs something, she automatically believes it will be given to her (see: the goodbye scene, where parvana asks shauzia for money immediately after dropping one of the most last-minute emotionally damaging information! and then looks surprised when shauzia is, in fact, upset about it!)
she is selfish!! and, in all honesty, i love it! we need more people to recognize this!!
