Skookum played so nicely at the dog park! He made friends with a shy, blind German shepherd and played so calmly and gently with her.
He stole a squeaky ball from another dog, and then would stand close to the German shepherd and squeak it to get her attention until she trotted over then drop it in front of her. She would sniff it then Skookum would pick it up again and move a little further away until she followed the sound again.
The owner said not many dogs play gently enough for her, I just think that’s so sweet that she and Skookum shared a gentle, low key game of keep-away 😊
This is SO CUTE I CAN’T HANDLE IT. Skook does accessibility better than basically any human. It’s not that hard to adapt what you’re doing so that everyone can participate and have fun!
He’s such a love and had so much fun playing with her - we could probably all take a lesson from them 💛💛💛

who is a good boy
Skookum sees what you’re up to and is very disappointed
JUST KIDDING HE LOVES YOU AND KNOWS YOU ARE TRYING YOUR BEST!
A Brief History of Skookums
My family has had Samoyeds ever since the fifties, and aside from the first one named Sam, they have all been named Skookum. They thought of the name while loosely following Captain Vancouver’s travels around the Queen Charlotte Islands on sea plane and sailboat (specifically the Skookumchuck Narrows in British Columbia). Their dogs accompanied them on many of their boating trips, and one of my grandpa’s favorite things was to get Skookum in his lap and sing/howl - they even sang on tv together!
In 1955 my dad was five, and played with a litter of samoyed puppies that his neighbors’ relatives had brought over. He loved them so much they gave him one of the dogs to take home and history was made! (HAHA CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT TODAY GIVING A FIVE YEAR OLD A PUPPY WITHOUT ASKING THE PARENTS?)
This is one of the reasons I’m so excited about the Skookum yarn! My grandparents collected the fur they combed from their Skookum(s) and had it knit into two sweaters - the first was 100% samoyed fur and was so fine that it was very soft but not great for durability, and the second was mixed with sheep’s wool and knit with some Fair Isle color work.
They have become sort of a family mascot, we all love them to pieces and there is usually a Smiling Sammy in the background (or hey, foreground) of lots of family photos. It’s a funny tradition that I never thought too much about until getting my own dog (and trying to name him Bair but everyone just calling him Skookum until we accepted it!)
I lost my last grandparent a few weeks ago and have been reflecting on family and traditions and legacies, and this just seems like a really cool one that I’m really happy to be continuing. Look at that last pic on the bottom right, that old Sammy Sass ever since 1955!
Jason carrying Skookum the Samoyed over things he’s too scared to walk on, so far this includes narrow bridges and floating stairs. Poor baby!
Joyous news to report: Skookum successfully navigated the bridge over the Ballard Locks today like a big boy instead of needing to be carried over like a baby. What a brave boy!
Minor setback today, but hey, it’s like that saying: “Two steps forward, one splaying out on all fours and making somebody carry you across”
when youtube restricts your videos
They don’t give up so easily nowadays
“i’m gonna get what i want” what an entitled asshole
During class one of the boys silently slid their calculator over to me and this is what I saw.
