Jason didn't want it to come to this.
"Unlock the door, Jason."
Jason tried to not let it come to this.
"Jason!"
Jason held on for days, looking for some alternative, any other option to get them together, to get them to talk. Anything to avoid finding himself in this exact situation - on one side of a locked hotel bathroom door, with two of his closest friends, who also happen to be the most dangerous people in whatever room they're in, on the other side, threatening him with bodily harm.
"Jason Grace if you do not let me out of this room right now - !" Nico shouts, rattling the handle again.
"Oh, you'll what? Kick the door down?"
Percy's sarcasm really carries through the heavy wooden door. It'd be impressive, if it hadn't been the source of Jason's misery over the last four days.
"What, you think I couldn't?"
"No no, I'm sure you could - or maybe we could find a baby deer to do it."
"Well we can keep that as an option if bashing your thick skull against it doesn't work," Nico shoots back icily, and well. Maybe half of the source of Jason's misery.
Bring Percy and Nico on a road trip, they said. It'll force them to talk to each other and realize their feelings, they said. Yeah well, they were out of their minds for ever trying this, Jason thinks, knocking his head against the door in frustration. If he ever sees them again, he's giving them a real piece of his mind - if he has any pieces left.
The them in question being himself, from about a week ago when he thought this trip was a good idea.
"Well how was I supposed to know the tiny horse was some kind of cursed relic?!"
"Umm Jason follows you into the bathroom to give you a mysterious stone horse - suspiciously identical to the one we saw at the Troy exhibit yesterday -"
"Yeah and then who came in here to look at it?"
"- as a 'gift' with absolutely no context, and you thought there was even the slightest chance it wasn't magical?"
"Well maybe not but it might not've been cursed!"
"It was discovered in a tomb!"
"Doesn't mean it was -"
"In a swamp! In the hands of a mummified corpse!"
A put-out huff and a brief silence. Jason listens, ear pressed to the locked door, momentarily hopeful. Maybe they're finally losing the energy to fight about this...
"I mean, how have you never heard about Greeks bearing gifts?!"
... or maybe the size of the bathroom will keep the collateral damage to a minimum and it'll be easy for Jason to clean up the blood.
"He's not even Greek! And sor-ry if I don't just immediately distrust someone's intentions even though we've been friends for years -"
"Oh for fuck's sake," Jason shouts at the wood, and for once the two of them shut up. Jason takes his chance.
"Look I didn't want to give you a cursed horse! I just can't take it anymore, whatever's going on with you two. Whenever you're in a room together it's like you go out of your way to piss each other off, but then when one of you eventually storms off, the other sits around moping and pining and being all wistful about it, making it my problem and asking every two seconds if I think we should go looking for you! Then you're back together and inseparable for all of a minute before it starts all over again! It has to end, I'm losing my mind, and since one of you enjoys teleporting away from his feelings -"
"I do not teleport away from -"
"Nico has feelings?"
"Quiet! You think I wanted to steal the cursed swamp tomb relic? Of course I didn't want to steal the cursed swamp tomb relic. I'm surprised my face hasn't melted off yet, but honestly? It'll be worth it if it traps the two of you together - and more importantly, away from me - long enough to either kill each other or admit you're in love. I honestly don't even care anymore which one, just figure it the fuck out!"
There's a long silence.
"... damn, Grace. Didn't know you had it in you."
Another pause. When Nico finally speaks, his voice is right against the door, quiet and a little panicked. Jason feels his heartstrings tug traitorously on his resolve.
"Look, Jace, I - I appreciate what you're trying to do, but he doesn't, it's not - nothing has changed and I just... I can't do this, okay? Please?"
"He doesn't what?" Percy asks, from further away. Jason holds his breath.
"Percy, just - don't worry about it."
Movement. Muffled footsteps start and stop.
"No, tell me. I don't what?"
Percy's voice is much closer now. Jason considers praying, but that feels kind of loaded, given what he'd be asking for.
"Well, you don't."
"No, you don't."
A dismissive scoff. Forget loaded, Jason's praying.
Dear Dad, I know it's been a while, and you kind of hate them -
"Oh, is that what you think?"
"I mean, not always, but half the time it's like you can't stand being in the same room with me, Nico, so what am I supposed to think?"

If there was anything else to hear, Jason misses it and he is just fine with that. He's already out of the room, halfway down the hall and pulling out his phone to open his one group chat.

J: Well, the good news is that they're still both in there and they've stopped shouting.

you ever think about that fact poseidon has a connection to the underworld in terms of greek mythology and what that means in terms of percy & nico's relationship? because I sure do
okay I hope this is coherent enough to understand and I'll put it under a cut as I rambled...
so, from what I know of my own research, poseidon has historical links to the underworld in ancient greece
firstly in mycenaean greece poseidon is a diety linked with the underworld (instead of hades) and his usual oceans. in current myth/pjo, this follows into posedion as not just a water/ocean god yet also with his connections to the earth, such as him being described as "stormbringer" and "earthshaker" and percy having powers over these
as posedion's domain stretches over the oceans, the earth and (historically) the underworld it makes me wonder if percy feels more connected, drawn to, at home in, nico because of that connection and vice versa. for example, percy has dreams about nico, searches and worries for him each time nico is in danger (botl & nico in the jar etc.) and is the only one to have described shadow travel, an underworld power, so positively. I wonder could they possibly feel like something brews between them that pulls them together because of this unlying connection thanks to this link between their parents? I guess you could even stretch this further and ask the question of, do their powers respond to this connection? are percy's powers over the earth stronger around nico or link up with nico's in any way?
also, water symbolises the passage between life and death with the crossing of the river styx. according to archaeological finds, funeral rites contained honorary practises to posedion, such as in offerings, and offerings were also left at grave sites in posedion's name so that their passed love ones may have a smooth and easy journey through the underworld's rivers
I feel like percy acts as that bridge between the living and the dead, especially in tlo. after the styx he tells nico to stay in the underworld, get hades on the side of the olympians and why does nico agree to do this? partly because of percy. percy and, in turn, nico are the reason that hades turned up to fight in tlo and therefore connected that bridge between the surface and the underworld. taking this beyond canon, I feel like nico doesn't really have much keeping him on the surface if his relationship with will failed or didn't happen. he's got hazel, but she's busy in camp jupiter, and he briefly had jason + reyna, yet who else would possibly motivate him to stay on the surface? his history and relationship with percy. I don't think nico and percy could ever truly banish each other from their lives no matter what type of relationship they have as their history is too deep and entwined with one another. therefore, for nico, percy acts as that bridge of connection between the mortal world and the underworld
I bring this up as an exploration point of percy & nico's connection. does this underlying connection between percy's father and nico's fathers realm bring them closer? is it a natural pull they can't explain or one that is purposefully chosen upon time and time again? maybe a mix of both?
there's probably more to this but that's all I have right now so hope you enjoyed my yap! I just think it would be an interesting concept to explore in terms of nico and percy's relationship
is that female character really that uninteresting and irrelevant and lacking personality or do you just choose not to read any of her scenes as deeply as you would with a male character
I talk a lot about the whole ā I am nothing. And like you always say, you want nothingā thing that andreil has got going on but Iām listening to tfc (at least try to pretend to be shocked pls) and itās Neil who calls himself ānothingā first to Andrew so now Iām thinking thoughts about Andrew being so intrigued by this weird ass kid whoās so pretty Andrew thinks heās hallucinating and consciously or subconsciously (idk) saying he āwants nothingā knowing that what he really wants is Neil and is finding any way he can to say that without actually saying it.
someone asking neil years down the line how he knew andrew was āthe one.ā neil looking at andrew across the room & casually responding: āthere was no āone.ā he was the only.ā
Andrew is so long suffering because just imagine how much effort that boy would have put into looking good when going out in Columbia with Neil - only for Neil to never once notice or comment on what Andrew is wearing.
He doesn't even mention what Andrew is wearing for Halloween. Neil describes the miniature details of Andrew's smile and tone of voice for 3 pages straight, has the whole "are you dating Renee" conversation and never tells us what the fuck this man is dressed as.
