7H finally stopped her mindless chatter the moment she felt the slightest weight nudge against her shoulder. It had been beyond the time they agreed on sleeping, and though their pods urged them to recuperate from their close call of a mission, the pair couldn’t help but indulge in the archives of plentiful information. They had made a little bit of a mess with the old books they found, but what was the harm in learning a little more about human culture? There were pages on Earth’s geography, animal life, witchcraft, fairy tales, and everything they could possibly think of. It was truly a gold mine! What other opportunities like this would they get?

“4S..” The healer murmured, realizing just how slumped over he was– he must’ve been out cold. She didn’t dare to just leave him like that though, and with a delicate maneuver 7H managed to keep him from tumbling back or forward for the time being. Shoot, moving someone was harder than she thought.

She contemplated just how to get him back to bed. Carrying him was out of the question, considering her size. With a determined huff, 7H held the scanner between her arms in a careful embrace as she slowly inched her back against the wall, at least giving herself some support in case she drifted off in the same way. When she was back in a somewhat comfortable sitting position, the healer guided the sleeping android back down on the edge of her lap, making sure the fluffed up ruffles of her dress were a good enough pillow for the evening. She still had her curiosities after all, this book on magic was just way too interesting to put down..

“I wonder what you’ll think about all this when you wake up..” 7H talked quietly to herself as she resumed her ‘research’. Even though it was most likely a work of fiction, she was gravitating toward these sorts of subjects much more than she should’ve.

“….” It was hard not to talk. She didn’t want to bother him of course, but..the silence was weird. Weirder than normal. She didn’t want to sleep..

“Thank you for being my friend.” 7H knew he was asleep, though that didn’t stop her. “We’ll be alright….I’ll make sure we’re alright.”

“I’m usually with 9A, but he had to stay behind for some minor maintenance. As you can expect there are only a small handful of extra bodies we can be reuploaded into so we have to stay in the best shape we possibly can.”

Twelve did miss his partner’s company, but at the same time, it was refreshing to not have to deal with his sarcastic and cold-hearted nature. Down here alone he could at least take the time to appreciate earth’s beauty and not be lectured about keeping his blindfold on at all times. 

“I’ve been done with my current mission for a little while, just kinda waiting on new orders before I’m given the OK to return to the bunker. If you’d like some assistance for a while I’d be happy to help since I really don’t have much else to do.”

4S nodded in agreement even though he had no idea what the spare body situation for such old models was like. He was not exactly a newborn himself, but he had never had any trouble uploading his personal data up to a spare body at the bunker in the rare occurence where the one he used on Earth was destroyed. Would he some day face the same fate of having to be extra careful with what he had been left with...?

“Well, usually us Scanners work alone, but I suppose there is nothing wrong with having some company as back up!” He doubted it was against the regulations at least, as it appeared that 9A had not received any further orders. “At least I don’t have to worry about being ambushed by machines when I have a good old fashioned Attacker by my side, huh?”

4S was by no means antisocial, and 9A piqued his curiosity.

“Follow me, then. I was headed this way. The route seems all clear, but if you are going to attack something, at least give me a warning so I can jump out of the way, alright?” It was an attempt to lighten the atmosphere with a joke.

“Gotta prove I’m useful otherwise they might scrap me.” He pointed out with a nervous chuckle, knowing there were only so many times he could be transferred into other android bodies too. Sure that didn’t keep him from self-destructing, but he never dared to use the black box, or his “B” mode either.

“If that’s what you want then go right ahead.”

He had no problem with the scanner make the report for the both of them, especially since his own operator was just about as cold and rude as 9A was.

"Just a minute, then!” 4S said cheerfully and turned to his Pod.

Pod 540 was at times a sassy one, but more likely to oblige with other YoRHa members around. It was interesting to think that a simple animate object that had been designed to do five things at most seemed almost sentient at times.

“Hey Pod, can you get me directly to command? Unless Commander is busy, of course. Then we’ll wait.”

His request was delivered as unurgent, which he did not seem to mind. The brief silence gave him a chance to give 12A a look over. He did not seem dangerous - which was a strange thought to have of an Attacker - and he was able to detect his black box signals as non hostile, which meant that they were still considered to be a part of YoRHa and therefore unable to attack him.

He had been too quick to jump to conclusions, all because the manifacturing of these models had stopped ages ago.

“Status: unable to reach command. Suggestion: Report your inquiry directly to your Operator to avoid humiliation,” the Pod 540 said. 4S decided to ignore whatever the part about “humiliation” was supposed to mean.

“Do that,” he told the Pod, which she did.

“So,” 4S said to 12A, “you’re alone here? No back up? I know Scanners run solo, but usually B-units work in groups. Or, well, I assume that was the case for A-units too.”

They must really want to get rid of the old models, sending them on dangerous but seemingly aimless missions, huh.

                                                   “Yeah cause I’m old and refurbished.” Twelve commented with a chuckle, clearly not intimidated by the Scanner model, keeping his blindfold off even though Nine often lectured him for it.

“Unit 12A. I’ve been sent down here to eliminate as much of the machine population as I can just like everyone else so you can relax.”

4S held his composure. The perfect poker face seemed to be a requirement for any YoRHa soldier, and he had worked hard to perfect his own. Depending on how observant the other android was, however, a slight sigh of relief could be spotted. It helped to get the built in pressure out of his system, really.

“They send old models all the way down here?” 4S continued the investigation. Well, a fellow android was rarely an enemy, save the ones gone rogue, so there was no reason for them not to cooperate. However, he was extremely intrigued by whatever made such an old model still work and how the androids had, in lack of a better word, evolved over time to become the best they could be as they were.

If he had found a corpse, he could have at least dismantled it...

But yes, friends. A fellow comrade.

“Unit 4S, sent down here to detect any leftover machine lifeforms from, what I assume, was your mission,” he said in a friendlier tone now. “You’ve done a great job! The command will be happy. Shall I report for us both?”

A final test of trust, if you will.

“I found some hidden gems at the Resistance Camp, and from the machine life form known as ‘Pascal’! Well..that was awhile ago.” Her smile faded at the mention of an old friend, or what she considered a friend through this ordeal anyways. 7H’s chipper tone didn’t match her expression for once, but she didn’t want to drag down their exploration with such gritty details. Patting both her cheeks against her gloves, she grinned at his enthusiasm again. The hints of negative emotions like this were rather inconvenient.  She presumed he felt similarly, but she was struggling not to let the loneliness creep up on them. How much longer did they have? There was no point in counting down the days, but she was already noticing just how silent and overgrown the world was becoming again. 

“I apologize for now showing you earlier.” 7H fluffed out her dress as she guided him outside the Forest Castle, the loud clicking of her heels no longer a threat to the lifeless machines outside their reach. She could walk without fear now, but she couldn’t help but feel just a little disheartened. Of course she didn’t want to engage in combat, but even just hearing the conversations between their enemies was entertainment in itself.  Closely following the riverbank, she made sure 4S kept in stride beside her. He was capable of managing for himself of course, but she always feared that he’d be gone. Why? She wasn’t sure. “I didn’t tell anyone else this, buuut..I found some other things too. Taboo about magic and witchcraft..have you heard of it? Humans had these stories about sorcery and people with powers..” She was teetering on fact or fiction, but how was she even supposed to know? Crouching down to an open cavern, 7H stopped and pointed at a few scattered flower petals on the ground. They were close. “Anyways, they’re through here! It’s a little tight of a space, but when we get through it opens up into a massive flower bed! Don’t ask me how I figured that out, haha..”

"Pascal, huh? I have done a few tasks here and there for the resistance camp in exchange of spare parts, but I never met a machine lifeform there. You mentioned he was friendly? That sounds surprising. But considering how weird everything has been as of late, nothing surprises me. If the resistance has formed a truce with certain machines, I suppose I won’t rebel against the idea. Doesn’t mean I have to be fan of it. But if I meet him, I will certainly ask if he has some interesting data to share!”

The strode forward, away from their previous hideout and towards whatever 7H deemed so importand and 4S so fascinating they were determined to take the risk of dormant machines suddenly turning aggressive, and facing their enemies instead of facing the sky, with their green round eyes blinking occasionally.

“I’m sorry, what?” He must have heard her wrong. The small river they were following up made some noise, and muffled some words. “I thought you just said magic. There have been mentions of things regarding magic in the data of the old world, but most it is children’s stories. Sometimes humans could be brutal, and deemed undesired people to be witched and therefore executed them, but witches were not real. Unless you are talking about...”

He frowned again, following in her trail blindly. Once he had dug in too deep, and found some data that had been incredibly difficult to access. The only word that had stuck in his mind was “project Gestalt” yet he had never figured out what the project had actually been about. Could something like that be regarded as magic...?

“Oh, here?” 7H cut off his train of thought. He was familiar with the crack on the stony cliff, but had never wondered whether squeezing through would be worth it. The world seemed quite similar everywhere regardless of different biomes.

“Well, you’re the host here. I’ll follow you, so you squeeze in first. I’m right behind you.”

“You’re right. They must have adapted in their own ways to the environmental changes around them..even with..well, everything. Though I’ve heard of plant and animal life that had survived the most chaotic of wars and skirmishes– so the evolution of a flower like this is incredible.” 7H echoed his fascination with the floral discovery, though she had a little less restraint when it came to conversational skills. Oversharing was unfortunately natural to her, considering the other Healers she engaged with were..wiped. There was only so much their bodies could flush out and overcome. Not that human medicines and herbal advantages were completely effective on androids, but there was no use tossing out possibilities. Creating further records could have been useless or groundbreaking, but she hoped they were worth it.  “Don’t worry. I didn’t stumble upon anything new besides that, but I am looking for more materials that humans recorded about their medical field. A plant called Aloe Vera could supposedly soothe burns and minor skin conditions, and another called Goldenrod aided as an anti-inflammatory agent!” Alright, she mainly just wanted to visit the goldmine of a flower patch. She wasn’t even sure if those plants were even around here.. Gesturing toward the the stairs leading outside, 7H grabbed her medical satchel and held it tightly against her waist. As lonely and quiet as it had been, it was rather difficult for her to sit in one place with so much potential waiting for them beyond. “Even with all of that gone, I think we could build up a library of new information all for ourselves if we have to. We can start with these flowers! They’re just beyond the river, in a secluded pocket. The living specimens are thriving..it’ll make for excellent data collection.”

Her fascination with the planet earth was what had always piqued his interest. It was true that scanners were there to gather intel while healers stuck around to fix mafunctions, battle scars, models gone berserk, but at times like these he felt like they were almost the same - it was simply their direct actions that separated them. The curiosity, the hunger for knowledge, was what connected them over the limintation artificially assigned to them by numbers and titles.

“That is fascinating! Where did you find this data? I have been skimming through some leftovers of whatever humanity left behind of their knowledge on botany, but the amount of information is great and most of it is irrelevant, focusing on aesthetics, on species long gone... If you have any hard data to spare, please share some with me! Especially the stripped down version. I’ll clean it myself.” He grinned and rubbed the back of his neck. It was a strange gesture with no further intention but to signal how embarrassed he was, asking for such a favour and having nothing to give in return.

“I know this sounds bizarre, but please hear me out,” he continued to explain, as he wanted her to understand his enthusiasm. “We know android bodies have a reaction to certain species of fish. I mean, consuming mackrel can destroy you, quick and easy... But if that is possible, why wouldn’t healing through aloe vera or any other herb be? We react to the things this planet provides us with, even if we don’t need them! It sounds important!”

It felt like something performed a flip in his chest. He did not have a heart in the same sense as humans did, but he knew it was an organ that had been referred to as some sort of emotional center for a long time. It was excitement he felt, pure curiosity and the thrill of digging deeper for the truth. His previous interests were long forgotten, and all he wanted was for 7H to share whatever she had found out.

“Please show me the way to those flowers! I need to see it. I want to understand everything there is to them. And even if there is nothing of importance for us to understand, they can be a clue for us to find out where we must go next!”

Anything to have a goal, anything to know what to do next. With the bunker gone, 4S had to give himself his own instructions to remain functional, active... sane.

@4gottens continued from here 9S let out a low, displeased sigh as he slunk his way up the stairs of the library where the fellow Scanner- 4S- was located. Clutching a hand close to his chest, fingers gripping tightly at the fabric of his uniform shirt, he bit the inside of his cheek to keep his expression from souring into what it really wanted to be- a look of stress, or perhaps one of exhaustion. Each time he lays his eyes on 4S, he loathes how the other can be so blissfully eased into ignorance of the truth- the very truth that the Commander herself had told him. A part of him wanted to tell the other Scanner, to share with him the classified information that the Commander had given him with no qualms. He wanted to have someone else he could share this despair in knowing both of their existences were for no reason except to fight for something that would never acknowledge their struggles. 4S… Deserved the truth, but 9S was afraid of how the other android would react. He watches 4S with a sad look obscured by his visor, and then straightens out his expression before approaching, extending a hand to wordlessly graze his fingers against the back of the black haired android’s palm. He had, truthfully, considered moving his hand further forward- to curl his fingers in between the older model’s and grip his hand. But, he refrained, mostly for the other’s comfort. Instead, he lowers himself down to sit on the floor beside 4S, a weak laugh escaping his lips. “Yeah, everything’s going alright…” 9S bobs his head in a nod. “Uh- no, I don’t. I just wanted to check in on you, really. I can go, though, if that’s what you’d like?”

"So everything’s good? Good,” 4S said cheerfully. “All is well here, too. I hope you remember to take good care of yourself on the field. I can’t afford to lose you, so hang in there!”

9S seemed battleworn, and he could imagine how much in need of maintenance he was with the depressing (in 4S’s vocabularly, depressing meant something lacking much new knowledge or intel to offer) but extremely convenient bunker gone, considering spare bodies were few and far in between now.

“Really? That’s kind of you,” 4S said, mildly surprised. “I think it’s the first time you visit me for no reason. Well, ingoring the time you wandered here by accident and found me. Or caught my signal when I tried to contact the bunker and request assintance.” He had always felt like that out of the two nearly identical scanner types, he was the more friendly one. Even though 9S was not exactly aloof, he had seemed a little distant at times, more than what 4S was used to with most scanner models he had interacted with. However, his times of cooperating directly with the command were long gone, and new models were - or rather, had been - developed all the time. Perhaps being too approachable had its downsides on the battlefield when you were already unfitting for direct combat.

“No, no! Don’t go,” he said. It sounded a little embarrassing, but he let it slide. “If you’ve got nothing new for me to interpret and compress, I’m not busy at all. I also feel like you should stay for a spell. I know you are perfectly capable of self-hacking and performing your own maintenance, but doesn’t it feel nice when somebody else does it for you for a change? As you know, spare parts are a bit difficult to come by at the moment, so you have to be extra careful with what you’re doing.”

There was a small pause. He lay the book he had been skimming through down on the dusty foor carefully.

“So how is the outside world now? Everything still as... quiet?”

He was not fond of the constant danger war had provided, but the permanent standstill felt off as well. They had not won, so not all was good in the world.

"Just kill me, then,” 4S snarled while pinning no6 down. It was an impressive act from a scanner unit, but as it turned out, anyone could be anything as long as they pretended it was true. The difference between their body weights or builds or weapons was irrelevant as long as 4S was filled with the desire of cold blooded murder. If he would kill No6 before the bastard had a chance to speak up or even react, nobody would care which one of them was actually stronger, who was in the right.

“I dare you,” 4S said, teeth revealed, infuriated by the insolence of the ever so infuriation No6, “I dare you. If you are so tough, if you think you are so much better than me, then kill me.”

It was an odd thing to say, he realized in the back of his mind. If No6 was indeed more effective, did 4S deserve to die? No, but he needed justice. He needed a reason for his existence, or for No6′s, or for anyone else’s. At that moment it was all he cared about, the bare minimum.

Somehow it had turned out that newer models were also more powerful. 4S would have never expected that, and it was something he would return to later. Yet as of now, all he cared about was ripping No6 apart, as he should have been.

“Why are you still here? Why you, and not him?!” he yelled and swung a hand to swat No6′s cheek as though the insane android had not suffered enough abuse. “You’re useless, insane! Why would someone like you make it, while he ceased?!”

For a scanner model, whom were known for being alert of their surroundings at all times as the status suggested, 4S was awfully preoccupied with a book mankind had left behind. Its pages were as fragile as dry leaves, and simply absorbing the information deciphered inside in the old yet oddly familiar language was impossible with so many of letters having been washed away. It was a strange one, a book with large, bold letters and many colorful pictures, yet reading it the human way still took 4S a while. Why had humans come up with a system in which each letter had to be deciphered individually rather than as one solid data package?

“Whoa!” he said as a palm much like his own, yet still different, brushed over the back of his hand. A quick scan of his immediate surroundings took but half a second, and he knew who the cheeky intruder was even before turning to look at him. “Nines! You’re back. It’s so nice to see you. Everything’s going well, huh?”

It was a miracle 9S had survived as far as he had. Perhaps 9S felt the same way about 4S, with the bunker and most of YoRHa gone. Both of them had their own reasons, and there seemed to be a silent, mutual agreement to not discuss the reasons for their... desertion. No, he preferred to call it survival.

“Do you have more data to share with me?” he asked, enthusiastic about it as usual. For whatever reason 9S had chosen to learn how to fight in melee combat, while 4S had even lost his Pod along the way. In that sense 9S was incredibly useful - and unique. “It’s been so quiet lateley. I’m almost tempted to give it a go myself!”

"Where did you learn that?” 4S asked, frowning behind his visor. Had No2 been going through his books again? Did he even know how to read them? Certain models had specific chips that could be installed to digest information about the old world into a data comprehensible to androids, but No2 was old. “This is what you do to human wounds! It is different for you and I. We can loose all the red we want and we would not stop functioning unless some vital composites are damaged. Hey!”

He found himself tackled down, as though it was supposed to make the situation any better. No2 was terribly stubborn!

“This is something I could deal with by myself. You really do worry too much. Just because I can’t swing a sword or two, doesn’t mean I’m useless.” Not to No2 or anyone else.

Relief washed over the Healer android upon being greeted by the Scanner. With the destruction of the bunker and the rapid depletion of YoRHA units, he was all she had to return to. She dreaded the day that she’d arrive back to an empty corridor, but refused to acknowledge the possibility of that ever happening. True to her duties, she never relinquished the responsibility of keeping both their bodies out of harm. There was only so much she could provide, though. Physical combat was another story..and they had avoided that for the most part.

“It’s pretty, right? I didn’t think I’d really come across one! Do you like it?” She was a chatterbox, but silently prayed 4S was used to it by now. Delighted about her discovery, 7H brushed out one of her artificial hair clips, comparing the vibrant similarities between the two. Considering hers were crafted in the likeness of the one that the Scanner held between his fingers, it was safe to say that she was beyond ecstatic to find the real version of what she replicated in the past.  “I’ve seen them in books before, but I didn’t think these grew around us! I didn’t want to pick too many, but I could show you where I found them. I figured we could almost match for a day!” 7H beamed, hands clasped together. “Do you have anything new to report?”

"Yes!” 4S replied effortlessly, not hesitating to study the flower a little closer. “It’s interesting. It always baffles me how most records of plantation were written by humans rather than androids. We are capable of classifying so many different species, yet none of us has come up with an idea of rewriting the existing records! Surely plants have evolved the same as lifeforms. We can’t just rely on what was written thousands of years ago and take it for gospel...”

He could have gone on and on, but a vague emotion reminded him that his endless rambling of lost yet easily revisable data was not what she wanted to hear. Not that it wasn’t interesting, but that it was not appropriate.

It was true they were surrounded by flora even if they ventured into the heart of the long forgotten city, as nature always seemed to find a way to break through steel and concrete. However, being surrounded by plentiful growth and plantae often made one blind for it all.

His curiousity had always had the best of him - even when it had been a matter between loyalty and knowledge. 7H did not seem to mind.

“Would you? That would be interesting!”

Perhaps he could be the unit with a breakthrough, the one regarded as genius afterwards...

“No, I’m sorry,” he said, shifting uncomfortably. “Ever since the... incident,” he continued, making it clear they both knew he was talking about the end of a special unit called YoRHa, “it’s  been quiet. The machines are quiet, the world is quiet. The bunker is... quiet. I suppose it is up to use to decide what to do with it?”

His laughter came out as forced. He had never been designed to make his own decisions to this scale.
