I unironically get so mfkn angry whenever someone who has actually read Nabokov's books start to finish will STILL refer to the girl as "Lolita". Like if you haven't read it you're kinda justified since that's what she's referred as in pop culture and stuff. But if you did, my dude. Her name is Dolores Haze. The one person who calls her "Lolita" is the pedophile. You are referring to a twelve year old girl the same way a PEDO refers to her.

This. I have my two cents to add as Lolita, the book and name (despite very clear instructions from the original author, Nabokov), has developed into something disgusting and entirely off-topic (referring to terms like "Lolicon”) after it’s release.

Lolita is not real. She’s not a real person, nor does she exist in the realms of reality of the novel‘s universe. Lolita is, as Humbert Humbert himself has stated and explained, a concept. A phantom concept with "no life of her own". No consciousness or will. She is a fantasy he created in his mind and Dolores Haze is the medium, the one he projects Lolita onto. An involuntary actress and home to his despicable and inhumane erotica. A projection onto a victim to inevitably give his desires life. Lolita as the ghost and fantasy is categorised as a nymphet: a demonic, secondary sex that causes destruction to the life of men like Humbert, making her the alleged "seductress" and monster (according to Humbert, a deceiver).

Referring to Dolores Haze, the true victim of this heartbreaking story, as Lolita is to diminish the suffering and scars caused by Humbert. The book is titled "Lolita" and not "Dolores" for a reason. Why? Because the novel is about a manipulative pedophile‘s fantasy, a memoir to use language to deceive the readers. It is not about little girls. It’s all about Humbert’s egocentric mind and his crimes. (Anybody who fails to realise this would do best to reread the story with more attention).

Dolores Haze, the actual person behind it, is a twelve-year-old girl who suffered severely at the hands of the monster calling himself Humbert Humbert, embodying the reality of uncountable young women across the world. She was not a person, had no dignity in the eyes of the protagonist. Lolita is a term that dehumanised and reframed Dolores‘ entire being.

It is not a love story. Just because you find "Lolita" to be melodious sounding does not mean that it was affectionate. It was possessive and cruel. A title to an object. Stop referring to Dolores Haze as Lolita.
