Little Woodcock #Feathursday
We just couldn’t wait to feature this not-yet-cataloged children’s book The Little Woodcock, published in 1967 by Charles Scribner’s Sons in New York. The author Berniece Freschet (1927-2010) was born in Montana and wrote over forty children’s books that feature the wildlife of her native state. The illustrator is Caldecott award-winner Leonard Weisgard (1916-2000).
Freschet’s writing tells a dramatic but tender tale that shows young readers what forest life is like for a little woodcock while Weisgard’s detailed illustrations bring her words to life. This is a story of survival that follows a Woodcock hen and her brood through the struggles and triumphs of a season. The little woodcock loses her mate to a hunter, protects her nest during an early spring snow fall, and escapes several predators including a hungry fox and a screech owl.
We featured the American Woodcock on an earlier #Feathursday.
