lenore dove had lost count the amount of times that she'd been accused of crimes she most certainly didn't do, but this time she may have gone TOO FAR. her uncles had warned her about crossing the line, told her that she needed to keep her temper rather than letting every little injustice make her upset. thankfully this time it seemed that haymitch had given an alibi that the peacekeepers COULDN'T IGNORE. she was let go almost as quickly as she'd been taken into the peacekeeper base. truthfully, it had been her who'd broken onto base in the middle of the night to free somebody WRONGFULLY IMPRISONED, but they didn't have any proof that it was her.

as she was released from the base, lenore dove ran to where haymitch was waiting and jumped on his back from behind. ❛ thank you for setting the record straight, darling, ❜ she spoke softly in his ear as she stayed on his back. she would NEVER ADMIT to him that it was her, but she was glad that he'd chosen to lie just a little bit about the time they'd met each other in the meadow. sure, they had snuck out to see one another in the meadow that night, but it was only AFTER lenore dove had run away from the peacekeeper base. the only reason she WOULDN'T TELL HAYMITCH what she got up to was because she didn't want him hurt because of her. she couldn't have them trying to torture or hang him just because he associated with her. it happened all too often, a rebel would be hanged and their spouses IMPRISONED for even just being with them.

❛ i don't know about you, but i think a dip in the lake sounds good right about now, ❜ lenore dove whispered, pressing a kiss to his cheek. she hoped that he wouldn't ask why they'd thought it was her. she hated those conversations, hated having to lie to him. it was the ONLY WAY to keep him safe though. she was certain that one day her REBELLIOUS ACTIONS would get her into trouble that she'd be unable to get out of, and when that day came, she didn't want for haymitch to suffer too.

50ths

lenore dove has the tendency to find herself in trouble more often than haymitch likes. he loves her fire , loves her temper , loves the fact that she isn't content to simply accept the cruel injustices the district is subjected to beneath the capitol's thumb. but he hates when she's taken into custody and he spends every second she's gone worrying about what they might be doing to her , how they might be hurting her. his nails are always bitten down to the nail beds , the insides of his cheeks bitten hard enough that the taste of copper floods his mouth. he hates it. it doesn't help that her uncles already seem to think he's a problem ; they probably blame him for this , too.

while he couldn't account for her whereabouts that entire night , it's not like a little lie ever hurt anyone , right ? and they had been together that night , so it wasn't really a lie ! ! maybe he just . . conveniently misremembered a little bit.

there's a small grunt when she suddenly leaps onto his back , more so from surprise than the weight , though he doesn't miss a beat. hands settle securely at the backs of her knees to ensure her stability , this position having grown as natural as breathing. “ anytime , ” is shot over his shoulder with a charming grin. while he's certainly suspicious that she was truly guilty , he's not in the mood to pester her about it right now. she probably won't admit to it , and he's just grateful she seems to be unharmed.

he can feel the ghost of her lips against his cheek even long after she's pulled away , warmth settling in the skin there. he's already beginning to move , fingers absentmindedly drumming against her skin as he walks. “ a dip in the lake , huh ? ” an amused sort of snort follows suit , though it's not like he's going to say no to her. he'd follow her anywhere if it meant getting to see the way her eyes light up , that ridiculously beautiful smile of hers . . “ i guess that does sound pretty good. i'll have to wash off all the sweat of carrying you the whole way. ” he teases , though he makes it look like light work. hattie has him hauling enough firewood and grain that lenore dove feels like a feather on his back.

katniss everdeen is some sort of jigsaw puzzle , created from stray pieces and parts of every ghost who still haunts him in the dead of night , and even those who walk alongside him whenever he's awake. his hand manages to shovel forkful after forkful of food into his mouth , though he isn't really tasting any of it. too many thoughts have resurfaced and he'd much rather prefer the sharp sting of alcohol as it slides down his throat ⸻ but he's trying. for the first time in years , he's trying. he has to try for burdock's girl.

her words hardly register in his mind , though he vaguely makes out the movement of her mouth moving and the almost - glare that seems directed at him. she's a tough egg to crack. he's silent for a long moment , lost in thought , lost in the resurfacing of far too many memories for his liking. it's burdock's eyes looking back at him , louella mccoy's braid still dangling over her shoulder. he sees some of maysilee's fire in her , too. he wonders if asterid ever sees the same.

instead , he forces a cheeky if slightly strained smile to his lips , one of those ones that seems to infuriate her the most. “ you've got mashed potatoes on your cheek. ” an amused snort escapes him as he shoves his cloth napkin across the table towards her. “ is that really the strategy you're going for , sweetheart ? ” spoken in that tone that she always seems to read as condescending , though he imagines that's as much her fault as it is his. “ if you think trying to look scary will get you far in that arena , you're sadly mistaken. ”

the rising sun is as bright and persistent as ever , and his girl manages to outshine it , like usual. the rays cast a golden silhouette around her through the shade of the trees , and sometimes he swears that the mere sight of her is going to knock the air out of his lungs and he won't ever find it again. she looks like . . well , he doesn't even know. she's a lot better at pretty words than he is. the palms of his hands grow moist and clammy still , even after almost six years since he first saw her in that apple tree. he's been doomed ever since.

she's such a charmer , his lenore dove. her words make his heart do a funny thing in his chest , and for a second , he thinks it might leap out from within him. “ i like the way you think , but i don't really think anything i say can save you from a branch snapping beneath your feet. ” and that branch sure does look far from sturdy. he can't help but wince as it gives a little creak beneath her weight , though he doesn't think he truly has to worry all that much. he'd catch her if it came down to it , he's sure of it. not that she'd need him to. lenore dove is a wild thing , that's for sure ; the light breeze only seems to lift her further , not jostle her around.

still , he finds himself worrying about her anyway. it's funny , the way your mind is just always in over - drive when it concerns someone you care about. someone you love. “ if you won't come down to wish me a good morning , ” begun with a playful grin , “ will you at least move to a different one ? preferably not a fraying twig ? ”
