I don't really know all of the exact details since I didn't entirely exactly exist back then. (It's confusing.)

But I can assume that the game was dangerous enough that he couldn't risk emotions getting him and his friends all killed.

Then you take into consideration that it was the game that gave him the powers to do this to himself in the first place.

And that the very same powers were used to oppress the planet once he'd made it out of the game.
