Okay so for anyone who doesn’t know what this room is, this is the Memory Void, and it’s in the Jewish Museum in Berlin, Germany. This installation is actually something you’re SUPPOSED to walk on. That’s half the point of the installation. Each metal face is meant to represent the faces and voices that were silenced by the atrocities of the concentration camps in World War 2. Stepping on them and making them sound out is meant to give the voiceless a voice, to force us to remember them.

I’ve walked on this, it’s an eerie experience.

I have a patient that told me I should be a doctor and not just a nurse. That I’m too smart and too good with people that my potential isn’t and won’t be reached unless I became a doctor.

I am kinda hurt by that, like is what I’m doing for you now not exactly what you’d want as your nurse?

I am in no way demeaning doctors, they are absolutely fabulous at what they do and I love them. But that’s what they wanted to do and this is what I wanted to do and I do a lot too. We all do in terms of patient care.

I am smart therefore I knew I could go to nursing school, and I am good with people, even more reason to be in nursing. Nursing is my thing. I like being on the front line every day and doing all the minute to minute stuff. I love it.

I’ve had this too, even from friends. ‘you’re too clever to be a nurse’… excuse me? What sort of bullshit is that. Implying that nurses aren’t clever. I always tell them the same thing:

Being a nurse isn’t for those who aren’t clever enough to be a doctor, it isn’t a ‘second best’ option. It’s the only option for us. Nursing is in our heart, minds and soul. If we wanted to be doctors, then I’m damn sure we would try to do it. Whilst we work very close together in healthcare, doctors and nurses have different disciplines, different models of working. 

They are completely different roles and shouldn’t be compared, but people don’t seem to grasp this and instead think nurses chose an easier option. 

I’ve seen the general public and older nurses complain that nursing has now become a degree profession, but I love it. Not only because we learn more theory, but because attitudes like this will slowly die out.

Never let anyone put you off, never let yourself and your role feel demeaned, nurses are awesome <3

I had the same thing with one of my patients. He told me that I shouldn’t settle because my talent would go to waste. He said that I was very smart and could do a lot, especially since I had time. I knew he was trying to say that I can do great things, but it made me feel like he thought that being a nurse would be a waste.

I informed him that I wanted to be a nurse and not a doctor. Nurses do a lot, and I learn something new everyday. I enjoy being with the patients and interacting with them. I love seeing them progress and learn a lot when they regress. Just because the doctor title is prestigious and well deserved, doesn’t mean being a nurse isn’t either.

We all deserve the same type of respect. We all (CNA, NA, LPN, RN, MD, NP, etc.) work together for 1 reason, to take care of our patients. We want them to get well and do the best they can. So just because you choose RN and not a doctor, doesn’t mean we are wasting our talent. We know where we fit into the puzzle of nursing, thats why we chose to be who we are.
