“Iron Throne”

At least, that’s what came to mind while I was seated here, on the coast of Disko Island with this royal aurora display and a gargantuan iceberg drifting in the distance.

While the mainland of Greenland is made up of some of the oldest rock on the planet, Disko Island is very young (geologically speaking). The island was created around 60 million years ago when Greenland travelled over a hot spot. Disko presents a very unique landscape that features some of the incredible basalt columns shown here, along with countless hot springs. The island also hosts the only major deposit of native iron in the world!
