Thinking about Ryan Gosling's best characters...lonely men loving women who aren't real.
Joi is not real. Officer K is rejected by society, and to cope with the loneliness he buys a Joi AI. In their love scene, Joi superimposes her image over a sex worker, Mariette, in order to give him the illusion that they are able to have physical intimacy but this is still not the real thing.
Joi's backup is destroyed, and the next time he sees her, she is an advertisement. He is confronted by the truth of what Joi is; an artificial companion, a commodity, and she is not a real girl.
Bianca is not real. Lars is lonely and dysfunctional, so crippled by his anxiety that he can't interact with people, not even his family. He buys a sex doll and has the delusion that she is a real woman. He treats her like a girlfriend although the relationship is never consummated physically.
I would argue that Irene isn't real, in the fact that she barely speaks and is more like an idealized idea of a woman. Perfect and not real. She is inaccessible because she 'belongs' to someone else. The relationship is never able to be physical, it never becomes more than an idea. The Driver makes decisions for/about her without her input. It's like she is a doll.
The Driver loves Irene but it is chaste, unable to become physical, just like Lars with Bianca and K with Joi.
Since Holland March's wife is dead, she is no longer physically available. He's become an alcoholic to cope with the pain of loving someone who isn't there. His wife is out of his reach now, he can't touch her, she can't love him back. It's not a real relationship anymore. In fact, it's killing him (via alcoholism).
ANYWAY our boy Ryan plays a lot of sad roles and he does it really well and I love Sad Ryan so much 😮💨
