Miguel's hand hovered over the knob, but he froze entirely in his track when he heard Rachel's proposal. Sure, there was no reason why she couldn't go out to get them something to eat. The chronically broke in him would've even preferred that, but the gentleman he aspired to be offered instead: "We both go. You're got my back, I have yours." There was weight to his words, as if to convey that this didn't just apply to now but going forward, as long as they'd stick together.

He presented his hunting knife to her and the gun with too few bullets left, just to show how prepared he was. "Let's go."

Without another word Rachel followed behind Miguel. Hand near her own weapons, blue hues attentively searched their surroundings. Anything that remotely moved was given a second, even a third glance. In their line of work, one could never be too careful. In their line of work, one wrong move meant death.

And though Rachel had gotten used to losing more and more comrades, she’d prefer not to attend another burning ceremony.

The motel’s vacancy light flickered above them as the pair reached the vending machine. Who knew how long it had been filled or how passed expiration the treats were. Truthfully, Rachel didn’t care what Miguel chose - as long as he chose quick. With her back to his, Rachel watched a couple exit a small red Honda. The same couple walked to a motel door … staring in her direction as they entered. 

That was weird. “You almost done? I can’t imagine it being a hard choice.”

this whole week i’ve done nothing but go to work and deal with whiny men, then go to our new house to rip carpet, sand floors, stain hardwood, etc. so extremely exhausted and it’s only wednesday 😭 tomorrow we have my daughter’s pre-op appointment (she’s getting hip surgery beginning of january) in between work and home renovations 😭😭😭 we tired fam

A playful chuckle escaped his lips at her accusation though he knew she was just mocking him. “I would never - not in that sense anyway.” Hasani winked teasingly at Cassie; unable to fight the unique banter they’d once shared and apparently still possessed. “But seriously, Cas, you do look stunning. And I mean that honestly.” He leaned in to deepen the eye contact further, almost as if trying to say could these eyes lie? “What brought you back? If you don’t mind me asking.” It wasn’t like he wanted to be nosy but for some reason he thought he’d never see her here again and now there she was - living and breathing. Call it gut feeling but he was sure there must have been a pretty damn good reason for her to return.

“You guess? Well you didn’t get any better at making compliments, that’s for sure” Hasani teased jokingly, his eyes shifting towards his now empty drink before he nodded quickly. “Why not? But only if you’ll be my guest. What do you say, Cassie? Join me for the good old times?”

Gently stepping around Hasani, Cassie took in a quick breath of air. While this was done to try and sort out her thoughts to properly explain her return, all Cassie got was the delicious scent of his cologne. It almost made her eyes roll back, lids fluttering shut to bask in the smell. But the sound of a patron putting coins in the jukebox and a small group of praising the song choice brought her back.

"I would love to," Cassie started as she began pouring his next drink. "But believe it or not, I'm a sober bartender. I'll still join you. My shift is almost done anyway." Once she placed the glass in front of her old friend, Cass beckoned for him to follow her to one of the booths toward the back.

As they settled in, Cassie gave him another once over, suddenly remembering all teh trouble they'd used to get in back in their high school days. "So, tell me, Hasani - what have you been getting yourself into lately?" If asked, Cassie would deny trying to avert the conversation away from her and her past. That information was not exactly her favorite thing to talk about. "I don't see a wedding band or a tan line. There's no way someone hasn't come and swooped you up yet."
