As we conclude this 3 part lesson on amateur mistakes, lets take on the most abstract and personal part: projecting emotion.Â
This doesn't mean you have to be a Sad Boy. Stylistically, you could choose to show little to no emotion in your song, but the truth is, music is as much an emotional endeavor as it is an intellectual one. The average listener is going to be more apt to return to your music if they vibe with it emotionally. Sure, you'll probably attract some purists with your super technical rappity raps, but those people are a minority.Â
When you're in the booth, you need to really REALLY act like you mean it. Too many rappers come in and just kinda mumble through their stuff, and the truth is, I'd rather hear bad lyrics delivered strongly than great lyrics delivered poorly. Its the reason why quote unquote "ignorant" rap is so popular.Â
Of course it also helps to have honest, emotional lyrics, too. If you're rapping about something near and dear to your heart, it will come out more passionately, more easily. Write about your mom, your break up, the dead homies or the good ol' days.Â
This is also where the line between "rapping" and "acting" gets blurred. When I say that, I don't in any way mean to sound dishonest, but sometimes it helps to put yourself in a certain mood before getting in the booth. One time I made my buddy cry while he was rapping a song about a recent break up. We got a great take, and I gave him a hug after.
