I think Hyacinth's characterization makes perfect sense when you think about it: we know H is an outgoing girl who loved being around people but now she has four siblings (A, C, D and F) living away with their own families (including the only father she ever had), Eloise has just spent a year in Scotland and when she's in London she's going to balls and whatnot and Benedict lives in his bachelor lodgings and is also a grown ass man. Then, the sibling closest to her, Gregory, went away to Eton and she was left alone. She's lonely!! She misses her siblings! And, in her position, the easiest way to Meet People and also have something in common with Eloise is debuting in society. So she's dedicating herself 100% to her classes and sneaking into balls. She wants to be part of everything instead of just reading about it! It's also why she is so hurt about Eloise dismissing her and why she looked so jealous of Eloise's praise to Sophie. She needs a Friend!!! Felicity Featherington you are sorely missed
