Happy 2021 year of the ox 🐂 🧧❤️
Willow Tree Blues
tears fall down glass cheeks streaming through the cracks in my smile across the shattered planes of my facade and I hide these painful truths
because how do you tell them why? that someone you loved has disappeared that they left that they just stopped talking. because to tell would be to relinquish all the secrets they told to tell would be to betray the trust they abandoned. to tell would be acknowledging the rift the left behind. and God I want to stop hoping they’ll call they’ll reach out, but they don’t
and this storm is falling because i’m tired. I wish this were the first time. it’s not. it’s not the first time i’ve taken someone in my arms and held the broken pieces, traced the wounded spaces, soothed the aching places, then touched the empty traces of the cold, forgotten graces in their wake. I have found the fractured remnants in the aftermath of caring.
in the shadow of the willows the tears and I sit and bask in silence and regret. not for me. I wouldn’t change my affection, will not mourn my actions. I will not make it meaningless, the warmth that’s born of love. I lament the loss of contact, intimacy, friendship, love. I regret their loss I regret their silence I regret the time we will not have
the rain is stalling, the gentle ebb of sorrow surging stilled beneath the leaves. the glass is flawless, the mask is immaculate, the chasms are covered, hidden with the shadow of my will I am lonely, I am left I am leaving I am looking I am learning I am loving
Change
You are in a meeting. A room with people. A room with papers.
A room with reports, and a boss, and a powerpoint presentation slowly lulling each occupant to sleep. Drowsy sunshine drips through the windows and pools on the expansive planes of the translucent table.
Fracture
In an instant everything shatters.
But stays the same.
A three dimensional puzzle so faintly embedded with chaotic pieces as to twirl your mind. It’s so very real, very tangible, very solid, but utterly broken.
A china bowl broken then restored. Different. Not the same. Each piece has been fit together with exacting precision. It looks like a perfect piece of porcelain.
The sense still remains.
Something is wrong.
That sense of not fitting--of not belonging--stirs, itches, scratches at the edges of your eyes. The smallest hints of the cracks remain, tracing the impossible limits of reality and dancing across boundless limits of your mind. So miniscule they might be imaginary.
The cracks cut through the lines of understanding. They skewer, crush, rip apart the fabric of perception.
A billion pieces perfectly fit into the people. The walls, the clothing, the creases at the corners of your neighbor’s eyes are lined with perfect, indiscernible fissures.
They are infinitely subtle, imperceptible, invisible to any eye.
But everything is so unimaginably, unfathomably
Shattered.
Translucent
Then it’s glass.
It is so hard to tell.
The skin moves like skin. The hair moves like hair. The paper moves like paper.
But not.
You know.
If you touch them they will splinter.
Cascade to the floor in a deluge of twinkling sound and glittering rain.
Cosmos
They are stars.
Covered.
Each surface is speckled with radiant, pure, burning points of light. Hands comprised of celestial prisms. Caressing cheeks, shoulders, hips full of galaxies. Eyes are full of nebulas, clouded and stormy gazes reflect the essence of creation. Lips, full and heavy, lush and curving with the weight of supernova fire.
Between the scintillating brilliance?
Black.
Plum.
Navy.
Russet.
All of dark, profound hue. Imbued with the deepest, thickest, embracing strains of shadow. Encompassed in ebony and entwined like lovers’ heady, shaded whispers.
Everything is incandescent stars cradled by the softest shades and draped in the heaviest colors in the universe.
Change
Lashes kiss your trembling lids. The briefest flash of dark.
And everything is normal.
But nothing is the same.
If anyone tries to tell you that Shakespeare is stuffy or boring or highbrow, just remember that the word “nothing” was used in Elizabethan era slang as a euphemism for “vagina”.
Shakespeare has a play called “Much Ado About Nothing”, which you could basically read in modern slang as “Freaking Out Over Pussy”. And that’s pretty much exactly what happens in the play.
It’s also a pun with a third meaning. There’s the sex sense of much ado about “nothing”, there’s the obvious sense that people today see, and then there’s the fact that in Shakespeare’s day, “nothing” was pronounced pretty much the same as “noting”, which was a term used for gossip. So, “Flamewar Over Rumors” works as a title interpretation, too.
The reason we call Shakespeare a genius is that he can make a pussy joke in the same exact words he uses to make biting social commentary about letting unverified gossip take over the discourse.
Hey, hey, hey, you’re forgetting the fourth thing, that noting (again, pronounced note-ing) was a pun on music NOTES and that’s why there’s a shitload of singing and dancing and puns about singing and dancing because Much Ado About Noting is basically Freaking Out Over Pussy The Musical: Gossip Making a Mountain out of a Molehill.

Can you know my pain?
Can you feel the aches that pierce my heart?
Can you touch the tender places
of my soul
and know my thoughts?
Can you open avenues;
light the deepest alleys?
Can you hold the
very most sacred pieces
of my self
and not shatter
Me?
Can you know my innermost
consciousness?
Can you,
without a doubt,
know my troubles
and fully realize the pain I feel;
a pain that
might not beat upon your heart
with the same
intensity
with which it ravages mine?
Can you reach
into the silent recesses
of my very most
guarded self
and know
how much a pain
has damaged,
Even if this pain would not so
damage you?
Can you understand
that my pain
is not your pain?
Can you realize
that my thoughts
are not your thoughts?
Can you fully perceive that
I
am not you?
Yet come to accept me still?
One Fateful Mourning
Th-thump.
The walls are silent.
Th-thump.
Do walls normally speak?
Th-thump.
No.
But this is a special kind of silence.
Th-thump.
It is silence that pervades the room even when a glass falls, shattering, to the floor, when anger falls deeply on bleeding hearts, when footsteps fall, rushed and pacing and still.
The silence remains.
Th-thump.
It remains through torrid whispers, subdued shouts, and the sobs that no one quite lets free.
Wraps itself around doorframes, couches, and faces so still they might be pieces of furniture.
Th-thump.
Everything is black.
Not in color, but in the feel.
Hollow feet tread on the broken shards and stop, surprised by something so sharp intruding upon the poignant vacancy.
Darkness creeps through the sunlight shining from windows and turns its liquid warmth into shallow, tinny incandescence.
Th-thump.
The silence thickens, twists, and strangles and pulls air from lungs, thoughts from minds, words from lips, strength from limbs.
It pulls and tightens and wrings them dry and desolate.
The air is heavy with tears that don’t fall and words that will only be spoken in dreams and deathbeds.
A woman falls to her knees.
A man crumples, his soul wadding up like a discarded gum wrapper.
Their day has gone from red, to white, to black.
A man in white, clothed in a PhD and antiseptic, offers vague condolences on ears that refuse to hear.
He leaves and they are lonely together.
Farewell, my dearest ones.
I am gone.
It wasn’t supposed to be like this.
What a cliché, right?
The over-used start to every story. Something goes wrong, the world is going to end, and your hero had to fix it.
Everyone says it.
And if they don’t say it, they’ve definitely thought it.
It wasn’t supposed to be like this.
Some kind of nuclear disaster. A failing of government and consequential descent into anarchy. A bioterrorist attack threatening the entirety of the human race. Zombies, Nazis, ancient gods, new age gods, supervillains with god complexes. The list goes on.
That should have been my story.
We were born to be enemies.
I was always the good-two shoes. A habitual rule-follower with a penchant towards teacher’s pet.
He was rebellious. Always following a set of rules that no one else knew.
But he knew.
He always knew.
Have you ever seen someone you admire so much fail? You respect them to such an intensity it almost hurts and they completely and utterly… fail. Try so hard and word so long only to trip and break an ankle twenty feet from the finish line.
This was so much worse.
Of course I admired him.
You could even say I loved him.
No, not in the gooey, hormonal, star-crossed young adult novel way.
Don’t patronize me.
This was so much more.
I loved him the way I love air or water or my mother. Like an eighteen-year-old looking back at their life before they take their first steps out into the world and realizing how terribly, terribly dependent they’ve been on other human beings for their entire life.
I loved him because I needed him as much as a sunny day needs a cold and lonely night by dictates of celestial law.
I’m not one to believe in fate.
He was always the emotional, superstitious one.
But there was something destined between us.
We truly were predestined to be the most glorious of rivals.
And now it was all gone.
He was always the emotional one.
Always acting on anger and wrath and self-righteous animosity toward those who didn’t follow his particular rules.
Perhaps that’s why he was so good at what he did. Constantly thwarting me and getting in the way of my missions.
The storm to my proverbial calm. Always mucking things up and leaving a trail of ruined building, crumbled statues, and various forms of rubble.
I was the calm one. I always considered my options. I waited for retribution and always let any anger I felt lower and lessen before acting.
I was judicial. I was calm. I was steadfast and continually mindful of others.
And I wasn’t good enough.
No matter how well I played my part, he always knew.
He couldn’t prove it—had absolutely no evidence—but he always knew.
And it was, admittedly, infuriating.
But I never lost my calm.
At least not outwardly.
I was perfect. Always in line, always punctual, always on top of my academics, always polite and kind without being too familiar.
I know some people called me cold, but I wasn’t cold.
I was perfect.
He… he was the opposite. He was a raging fire that flared and consumed and whirled through any space he touched. He flamed and raged and swirled and shone like the brightest fire.
I was starlight.
He was a house fire.
He saw the wrongs against himself.
I saw the wrongs against the world.
I don’t think anyone thought we would turn out his way.
Perhaps they thought I would become a scientist—world-renowned for my contributions toward the human race and the greater good. Or a first-class lawyer, prosecuting the criminal element of the world and bringing justice.
They were right.
Perhaps they thought he would become a soldier; a general. A man of action with the ability to enact his need for vengeance. A vent for his brutal temper. Perhaps an FBI agent of the leader of a country.
They were right.
They all knew we were both destined for some kind of greatness.
Life has an interesting habit of proving people right in the most brutal, painful, and unexpected of ways.
I don’t think anyone could have predicted this, how horribly right they would be.
I certainly wouldn’t have been one to choose this future.
For myself or for him.
I have no idea what brought him to the path he found.
We lost touch after high school.
For many years, I simply lived my life in a drifting manner. I plodded forward and continued in my streak of perpetual rule-following. He had floated from my life like smoke. His fire was as distant as a dream and I forgot what it felt like to burn.
If I had to pinpoint a reason for myself, it would be the pain.
And the loneliness.
I sequester my emotions. I cage them in a small, fiberglass box without a key. Then I pretend this box doesn’t exist.
But I feel deeply.
Does that make sense?
It’s not a terribly complex concept.
I may pretend not to have emotions, but I feel so much of the world and the people and all of the pain involved.
And it does affect me—in a slow, measured, lonely kind of way. Like the movement of a glacier in an arctic valley. Or the movement of the universe, vast and silent and expanding throughout the recesses of my soul to cling to all of the little bits that feel.
But in a more immediate sense, I don’t feel emotions as intently as others.
I watched over the pain I felt and was always careful to be methodic in dealing with it.
I couldn’t stop it though.
And it ate at me.
It ate at me through the lonely nights without another human’s touch. It ate at me as I made my way through university classes and never once made a friend, but saw the pains of each person around me. It ate at me as a lay on a couch after work, contemplating the universe and the pain and feeling the weight of a thousand miles and a thousand nights of wounds and a thousand thousand people suffering through the end of eternity.
Finally, I had had enough.
I had to do something.
I broke a rule.
Then another.
Then more.
Then many.
So many.
I was breaking rules all the time. My pain was leaking through the perfect façade. My control was slipping and my righteous path was fading.
However, I finally found a course of peace and assurance. I found a path and I found a place that was right for me. I settled into this course of action.
And he blindsided me with his storm.
Don’t get me wrong.
I knew exactly what I was doing. I had full awareness of my actions and their repercussions. They were necessary. Not always pleasant, but necessary.
But of all the people! Of all the people who could have interrupted my mission, it had to be him!
The one person who never truly believed in my perfection. He was the one who tried to stop the most important thing either of us had ever done.
We fought.
We tried.
We healed.
We escalated.
He showed his true nature.
I showed my true brilliance.
I shone.
He shone.
I was resplendent.
He was blazing.
He became a voracious wildfire. His house fire became a raging, explosive volcanic eruption.
My docile starlight became a radiant supernova.
We were glorious.
We were effulgent.
Then we weren’t.
He left and my air was gone.
My supernova petered out and I was left in the inky dark of the universe without a wildfire to keep me warm.
It took me months to track him down.
He was pathetic.
A shell. A hollowed out piece of skin on bones that supported nothing.
His fire was gone and he was cold.
He was drained and doused and desolate.
The absence of his wildfire had left a wasteland, charred, empty, and full of smoking ruined shells of what used to be a person.
It hurt.
I didn’t expect it to hurt.
I hadn’t realized that I loved him.
I hadn’t realized how necessary he was.
It hit me harder than his fire.
It stole mine.
I am not emotional (I might have mentioned this earlier).
I’m not.
I’m really not.
So why?
Why are there tears running down my face? Why are my knees weak? Why does my heart feel like the absence of a fire? Why can’t I control the emotions that I don’t have?
Why can’t I see the anemones I lay on this cold, hard slab through the emotion swarming in my eyes?
Why can’t I get up from the lonely granite that bears a name the world never knew?
Why is my pain staining the stone and freezing against my cheek as I curse and sob and insult a god I didn’t know I believed in?
Why am I crying at the grave of a name the world will never mourn, but always unwittingly adored?
This was my fight!
This was my story!
He was mine!
I’m so cold.
I’m so cold.
I’ve lost my fire.
Now I’m the moon without my sun.
The villain without my hero.
