RIP Dash Snow Also known for his infamous graffiti tag SACE. In 2009, Dash died of a heroin overdose in a New York hotel. After spending 2 years in a juvenile detention, he ran away from home. He used to get so wasted that he would take polaroid pictures to remember what he had done. And this was the start of his art career. At the age of 18 he met Earsnot (another NY graffiti artist) they became very close friends and started the crew IRAK. It was made up of some of the worlds most influencial graffiti artists like Nekst, Adek, Screw and Espo. Dash made his way to the top of the New York Vandal Squad list after his most famous piece; a huge Sace fill-in on the side of the Brooklyn Bridge, off a tiny ledge where he could have fallen hundreds of feet to his death.

Dash and Earsnot used to love tagging homeless people. Since they never changed their clothes, they used to sometimes pay them 20$ just to tag all over their clothes. Unlike walls, those tags would never get buffed out, theyd only wander around the street. Dash drifted away from the graffiti scene and began to concentrate on his polariod pictures and artwork(although he refused to consider himself an artist for a long time)

He started in the 1970s, tagging the name "King 13" every time he'd win a challenge, performing daredevil tricks on swings in local parks. He was a short lived member of a gang called the Bronx Enchanters and The Renegades of Harlem, where he learned how to paint trains.

He later became the president of TNB (The Nasty Boyz) and ex-president of TVS (The Vamp Squad), one of the most notorious New York graffiti crews. T-KID is still active and his work can be seen in the Bronx as well as around the world. He is also a member of MAC crew from Paris. T-Kid was originally asked to be the narrator for the Hip-Hop documentary Style Wars but he declined.

"Ces began hitting trains in 1983, staying on the showcase lines of the IRTs. As the wall movement began, Ces became a strong writer for the legendary FX crew. Through the crew he had entered the European scene and took full advantage of it, he continues to paint around the world and is co-owner of Tuff City in the Bronx."

Lady Pink was born in Ecuador, but raised in NYC. In 1979 she started writing graffiti and soon was well known as the only female capable of competing with the boys in the graffiti subculture. Pink painted subway trains from the years 1979-1985. In 1982 she had a starring role the motion picture "Wild Style". That role and her other significant contributions to graffiti have made her a cult figure in the hip-hop subculture.

Urban VS. Rural graffiti.

The urban scene and the rural scene are two entirely different things.  In the city we've got lots and lots of government property and thats what graffiti artists aim for. Theres lots of buildings and parks and underpasses, which is the most common places we find graffiti. But the rural scene is different, i mean we've got a couple artist, definitely a lot less compared to the city. Not only because we have a smaller population, but because there isn't many spots to hit. And even though everyone considers graffiti artists as vandals, you rarely see graffiti on residential properties. Also theres definitely a lot of rural artists who go to the city to paint, and you can see there tags around street signs and such but not much else.

What is the difference between vandalism and graffiti art?

The line dividing these two is often blurred out. For some all forms of graffiti is vandalism, and for some graffiti enthusiasts all of it is art.The line is placed differently for anyone.  But where should this line really be placed? I think that there is alot of street art out there that is amazing, people also underestimate how hard it is to paint with a can, and forget to appreciate the small detail a growing artist has worked on. I think all pieces should be considered art, because we all start somewhere, and those not so special pieces should still be considered, because practice makes perfect and if we bash their lesser work they'll get discourage and never improve. I like my city, and i like it even better with its colours. It makes it real, it makes it inhabited. People everywhere just trying to get their name out, or trying to make a pretty piece because thats what they're good at. Thats art. But if someone is tagging badly writen curse words on private properties, then thats vandalism. No good intentions.

Castro, a graffiti artist in Montreal is seen almost everywhere. Known for his notorious bombing, you can barely go anywhere in the city without seeing him. He first started writing in 1994. He was initially noticed by his tags on the back of highway signs. His graffiti is so well placed and known that it landed him in the headline of the newspaper and on international news.
