"To Follow the Light..."

RP blog for Dissidia's/FFI's Garland in the context of a sequel to FFI (called "Shards of Darkness and Light", written by deviantART member eternally-harmonious). His full name is Garland Levitan in this sequel. Mun and muse are 18+ and will RP with anyone.

Garland and Seth had just attended a party thrown in their honor after they had defeated a great fiend, and were now sitting in the living room of Garland’s home. 

“Ah, that celebration was great! Don’t you agree, Seth?” the general cheered, grinning.

“Yes, it truly was,” Seth replied. “But I am glad to now have some time alone with you.”

Seth had been wanting to ask something important of Garland, but had no idea how to go about asking.

Garland could tell by looking at Seth that the younger had something that he wanted to say.

“So, Seth, what’s going on with you? You were kinda quiet throughout the whole celebration... And by quiet, I mean quieter than you usually are...”

“Well, at least they don’t hate everyone. I hope that peace comes eventually.”

Garland looked around, and said, “This world seems pretty interesting. What else is there?”

Where to even begin? He could go on and on about all the things there were in Grymoire. He could talk about the Low Seas, Big Bridge, or about the Prophecy, possibly the Federation. Honestly, he really didn’t have a clue what to start with. Lann stares blankly into space for a moment before an idea comes to his mind. Why not talk about something in the area? He might as well. “Well, there's a Sunken Temple right below the ocean around here! You won’t be able to get to it unless you have some way to breath underwater though.”

“Wow, awesome! A Sunken Temple?! I bet there’s all kinds of cool stuff there!” Garland shouted, obviously excited. 

“Man, I wish I could breathe underwater... Heh, that’d be so cool!”

“Yeah,” Garland answered. “He had asked that so that I would have no memory of what it was that led me into darkness. He had wanted to have time to get me on the right path before he told me of my past…”

A sigh, and then, “I still cannot believe that he showed such great mercy to one who professed to be his mortal foe… Seth really is far too kind. But I am quite grateful for the opportunity that he has given me.”

— ☩   Perhaps it had been better that he did not know at all, but there was this nagging feeling at the back of his head that told him otherwise. Memories are important to Ingus, as he often indulges in nostalgic thoughts more than what was deemed necessary—he couldn’t imagine what he would be like without them.

           “I see.” Anything beyond that would have been too personal, so he discarded any questions that hung on to Garland’s statements. Soon enough, he stops by the wooden door of a barrack, which was ajar.            “I believe the hours are dead—most of the cavalrymen were assigned to scout the stretch of land between Canaan and the Vikings’ Cove, and the rest sent off to their homes.”

“Ah, that means I should probably get going,” Garland replied. “Thank you for your hospitality...and for listening to my story.” Garland thought, and then added, “If you find Seth, tell him I’ve gone back to Cornelia and am waiting for him.”

   “Ah, tea is fine,” Garland said. “As for Seth…All I know is what he has told me, as I have no memory of any of it. He used to travel with three others in order to protect the world from darkness. This was back when I was his foe, but he never really wanted to fight me. He had tried to talk me out of conflict, but I wouldn’t listen, so one of his allies struck me down. Then, I came back as an incarnation of the god of discord. Once more, he tried to persuade me to quit fighting, but I went after one of his companions, so he was forced to defeat me. He apparently felt bad for me - I have no idea why. So when he and his allies were offered a wish to be granted for each of them, the others made wishes for themselves, but Seth wished for me to come back, but without any memory of what led me into darkness.”    Garland shook his head and continued, “Seth’s allies were understandably upset, but they ended up abandoning him. He told me that even though he was unsure if his wish was granted at that time, he did not regret wishing for what he did. He’s very hurt that his allies didn’t understand him - he believed that their job as Warriors of Light was not only to protect the world, but to bring others from darkness into light. But he lost friends for my sake… It makes me feel rather guilty.”

— ☩   Nostalgia crept up to him, entangling his heart as a vine would to a wood-post. It seemed that Seth was not much very different from himself—as they have both been entrusted with the duty to save their worlds from darkness. Coincidentally, with three other companions as well.

           Perhaps Garland was someone dear to Seth before they had become foes; as aside from a good heart, he knew nothing else that could possibly make him wish for Garland’s return. At the mention of Seth’s estrangement, Ingus felt great sympathy for him, his pace once again slowing considerably.

           “He asked for you to come back without your memories?” He followed everything well, save for that one detail. Was it by his request that Garland couldn’t remember his past? Or did he mean that it was some consequence, borne out of the wish itself?

“I am glad you understand,” Seth said softly. “I…do not know what I would do if I lost you. I cannot even bear to think of it. I do not want to be alone again…”

Garland’s heart sank as he heard Seth say this. He had always felt that it was cruel of the other three Light Warriors to abandon him in the way that they did - this had obviously scarred Seth emotionally. 

“I promise - I won’t leave you alone. Please, don’t worry about that. Together, we can overcome anything!”

With that, Garland took the younger man into his arms, holding him close to comfort him.

Seth had not expected to be embraced. Normally, he didn’t like being touched, but this was somehow different. He leaned lightly into the other and closed his eyes, sighing softly.

“…Thank you, Garland…”

Garland smiled warmly at Seth, glad that he could reassure the other man.

“You’re welcome…and thank you.”

With that, Garland let the younger go, but not before ruffling his hair.

“Haha, what was that for?” Seth asked, giving a rare laugh as Garland messed up his hair.

He realized the reason that he disliked being touched was that he had never been touched affectionately - the only touch he had ever known was based in conflict, and brought pain. But now, he knew what affection was, and it was a great feeling. He hugged Garland tightly just to see what it would feel like.

“It’s a way of showing that I--” Garland began before he was cut off by a sudden tight hug from Seth.

“Heh, you’re quite affectionate. I didn’t expect that...but I’m very glad.”

I’d like to find him again so that I can make sure that nobody takes advantage of his good-natured personality. It’s no good that I can’t seem to catch up to him… His well-being is important to me, and not just because he saved me. I care very much for him.”

If the tea itself will not suffice, then I can request for some food as well—I know the castle-maids well enough to ask for some fruits from the banquet.”

“Wow, a Goblin village? In my world, the Goblins are just wanderers that try to attack adventurers and steal their stuff. Do the Goblins here live at peace with people?” Garland asked, obviously interested.

“I don’t think the goblins here steal stuff, but…” Well, they certainly didn’t live at peace with the people of Cornelia that’s for sure. Though it was something that may come about in the future. Or at least it had seemed that way watching how Princess Sarah and Princess Goblin had interacted after that one intervention. That they could possibly work together and form an alliance in the future. Maybe. “They don’t really live at peace, not yet anyway. But I don’t think the Goblins hate everyone in the town anymore, so there’s that.”

“Seth? Is that the Warrior Of Light’s true name? If so, yes I am a ally of his and he is a dear friend of mine. My name is Bartz Klauser and I’m a Wandering Adventurer out to seek new and exciting things and areas to explore in the world. Who might you be, may I ask?”

Bartz replied as he extended his right hand in greeting to the taller man, smiling warmly when doing so.

“I believe that you are noble too Garland, just gotta believe more in yourself you know. Seth is a really good friend and ally to save your life when you were in danger, always worth having friends you can count on.”

Bartz replied as he looked to Garland, hoping his words can encourage the other.

“I try to be,” Garland said. “I want to be able to be of more assistance to Seth. He’s gone through enough hardship.” He thought a bit, and then added, “Thank you for your kind words.”

“I am Garland Levitan, general of Cornelia’s knights and Seth’s close friend,” he stated, reaching out to shake Bartz’s hand.

“It’s good to meet you.”

“I see, pleased to meet you Garland. It’s nice to meet you as well, you and Seth been defending the world? Wait, is Seth the Warrior of Light’s real name?”

Bartz replied as he shook Garland’s hand, a shocked look on his face when knowing of WOL’s real name.

“Yep, his name is Seth. We’ve been working together to rid the world of darkness,” Garland stated.

“He’s very strong, you know,” he continued after a while. “Just recently, he saved me from some Manikin that looked exactly like me.”

Garland hesitated, wondering if he would be judged by his answer. He decided that it would be better to tell the truth.

“I have been a knight ever since I was around fifteen or so. However, I have been told that - in another timeline - I was not the man I am now. I…was once Seth’s mortal enemy. As a knight clad in darkness, I did some hateful and cruel things, and yet - when the Warriors of Light struck me down - Seth wished for mercy for me. For a while, I had no memory of this past. It has recently been revealed to me, and I wonder what Seth ever saw in me. But I am truly grateful that he decided to save me. Thanks to him, I now follow the path of light.”

— ☩   A story of repentance was not something he heard so often—as feats of procuring heads and hides were passed around more frequently, and as small talk even. His sidelong glance evinced his strong interest; its withdrawal had not at all signaled that Ingus was unaffected by the sincerity he found so plainly in Garland’s voice. It moved him, to an extent.

           “The path of light,” he said, finding his own reiteration severely lacking in brio. He could not help but wonder if altruism was something Garland truly espoused, either solely for the sake of redressing his previous faults or not.            “I can see why you would chase him. He is…a personal savior to you, is he not?” Ingus threw a friendly smile at him. “Normally I would not pin my hopes onto luck, but I pray that you and he would cross paths once more. It is almost cruel how fate ofttimes manages to steer your course away from his.”
