hey margot robbie what the fuck??
I'm with Margot on this, honestly. I think it's weirder that adults see a children's toy & automatically make it something sexual and / or as a statement about society.... like honey, no. She's just a girl wearing a short skirt, high heels & makeup because she likes wearing them & thinks they're fun to bounce around in, not because she wants objectified & railed.
barbie's not a real living person making these decisions though. it's the same thing as when people try to defend some of the ridiculous costumes women wear in comic books by implying it's those women choosing to express themselves. they're not because they can't because they're not real. the creators behind these characters are making these choices. going back to when barbie was first created by mattel they purposefully gave her an unrealistic figure (big boobs, small waste, long legs, extremely skinny) that has been proven to literally be unattainable. that's been one of the strongest criticism against the dolls for years. people have called out mattell not because they think barbie could potentially be sexualized but because the company has already been doing it.
also on a side note robbie's comment about not being able to feel sexual desire without reproductive organs is wrong and weirdly reductive
me: listen white feminists constantly try to homogenize womanhood through a heavily westernized lens and pass it off as a singular universal experience which at best often runs adjacent to eurocentric standards of beauty and feminity and at worst gives way to trad fem ideology and i find it all a bit uncomfortable and bizarre especially when the media it's written into is consumed uncritically and celebrated with such disengaged abandon
ticket seller at the theater: so you're not gonna see barbie?
me: not today no
