Mentioned to my mom I'm asexual a couple months ago and today.... we got into the car and she hit me with, "So you use they/them pronouns now?"
I went, "What. no. she/her."
"How does that work? With she/her/hers and they/them?"
I stared at her. "What are you talking about?"
"Well you came out as-" and I said, "I'm asexual."
She replied, "Like an amoeba, I know."
"Oh. My god. No. Mom. It doesn't- it's not the asexual you learned about in biology. I didn't come out as a single celled organism."
With heavy relief, she said "Oh, it has a different meaning?"
"Yes, mom."
Image ID: a screenshot of a reply that says "Tbh it is pretty sweet that she thought you identified as a single-cell organism and instead of being incredulous, she tried to understand" /end ID
had to share this
In every way this is set up to be a joke like any other short video, it even uses the trope of main character in a wig to represent their mom, but it isn't funny at all. It's just sweet and nice
i might have outdated information! at one point i "knew" that rabies was a mammals-only situation, is that now known to not be true?
We know so little about rabies. I know more about rabies than the vast majority of people, but in the grand scheme of things, I know nothing.
Here is what I can tell you:
•There are many viruses that cause rabies. These viruses are called Lyssaviruses, after the Greek goddess of rabies, Lyssa. Most of them are mainly seen infecting bats.
•Rabies lyssavirus is the most commonly known species because it has multiple terrestrial vectors (dogs are #1, but other vectors include mongooses, skunks, and more.)
•All mammals can get rabies, including opossums. Their body temp has nothing to do with anything.
•Some birds can get rabies. Rabies has been found naturally occurring in chicken and geese. This likely has to do with the fact that they are large enough to not die of the bite wound and live to develop rabies. Birds of prey appear to develop humoral antibodies that fight rabies and make them immune.
•There was recently two new species of lyssavirus discovered. One in green tree frogs, one in Cuban anoles. We have never seen them in a live animal, so we don’t know what their “rabies” looks like. Inactive forms of the virus have been created in labs and can infect mice.
•there are likely dozens more unknown species of lyssavirus out there that we don’t know about because we aren’t looking, and there isn’t really any funding to look.

if we can set aside attachment discourse for a moment (please) i think the jedi marriage prohibition makes sense in a “please don’t enter a complex legal, financial, social, and in some cases religious contract, the specifics of which vary wildly depending on planet and culture” way. the single jedi with a law degree does not have time to draft everyone’s prenups to prevent the whole order from getting sued
#we could create so many interesting new problems if we ignore romance and make it about contracts generally#jedi prohibition on getting a loan. jedi prohibition on signing a waiver before bungee jumping. etc
"Qui-Gon didn't try to buy Anakin or the engine because there wasn't anyone in town who offered a credit exchange service" wrong. Qui-Gon gambled for Anakin under the table because after dealing with the Cyrkon Delinquency of 24850, Master Olobi, Esq, has personally promised to hang by the the toes from the highest tower of the Temple for one week any Jedi who generates any trackable legal transaction or obligation between the Order and the Hutts.

Sometimes “locking in” looks like sitting in the sun and remembering that your life is also meant to be lived, not just optimized, monetized, and turned into proof that you’re worthy.
