"Oh, a hug?" He repeated excitedly. "That's so nice of you to offer! I may have to take you up on it..." Her request didn't go unnoticed, and Ariel made his way to the kitchen. The seal on the fridge made a sticky sound as it broke, and he reached into the back of the big stainless steel box to retrieve the coldest bottle of water he could find. Withdrawing, he pushed it shut with his hip.

"I've never seen this movie before, I don't think," he said, strolling over to place the frigid bottle of water in her hand. Ariel went around the couch and took a seat beside her. He moved to put his feet on the table, decided against it, and settled in as best as he could. "Is it good? The movie I mean."

He couldn't help but beam in return at her smile.

"You're very welcome, friend," he said, closing the door behind her. "I mean, it's really my pleasure, anyway! You're doing me a favor, after all." 

Ariel crossed to the sofa. His hand slipped between the cushions, rummaged around, and resurfaced with the remote. He unmuted the television, and his once silent companion now blared to life, in the midst of an old black and white horror film. Must have been on one of those classic movie channels. Ariel gingerly returned the remote to a more suitable spot on the table and turned back to his guest. 

"I've come to find that it's not good for me to be alone with my own feelings and thoughts, you know?" He looked away momentarily, the smile edging its way off of his face. "I start to think awful things. Things that make me doubt myself and other people. And it's scary sometimes, you know? Thinking you're all alone in the world..." He paused, tilting his head to the side, and smiled again suddenly. "Oh, sorry! I got a little distracted, there. Would you like something? Water or a snack maybe?"

If Ariel had been any more excited, he would have wet his pants. As it was, he did trip over the coffee table in his mad rush to the door. He paused, righted it again, apologized to it. He contemplated hurrying to the door again, but there were magazines on the floor. Eleni wasn't allowed to think he was messy. So he picked them up, tap tapping them against the top of the table, straightening them all up, and placed them neatly back on the table. Oh, no. Too neat. He moved his hands over them and fanned them back out. Okay. Looked like he lived here. 

Seal of approval given to his apartment home, Ariel jogged the rest of the way (what little six feet it was) to the door and opened it, smiling brilliantly at his "friendly" visitor. 

"Friend Eleni!" He stepped out of the way to let her inside. "It's good to see you! Gee was I getting awful lonely in here."

A faint hum of static rippled out of the television in the living room, filling the little apartment with its buzz. Actors moved across the screen, smiling, modeling their teeth in a promotion for extra strength whitening toothpaste that was more or less just regular toothpaste with the label "extra whitening" slapped across the box. They would have argued otherwise--that it had these whitening agents that the leading brand didn't, that a study of undisclosed size and validity had assessed it as being 3 times more effective than the leading brand--but the little flat pictures, for now, had nothing to say.

Ariel stretched out upon the floor. The shrill, barely audible squealing of the screen calmed him when he was alone. Texts to Raphael had proven fruitless; either his angelic guardian had not yet figured out exactly how texting worked or he simply did not care to respond. He rolled over onto his side, closing his eyes, listening to the signs of "life" from the flat black box. Almost put him to sleep. But his stomach protested, twisted into knots. It told his little voice to say that he was not just alone now but would be in the future, tried to goad him into failure, convinced him he was suffocating in the darkness he'd created. 

He opened his eyes. 

This wasn't where he'd wanted to be today.

Ariel got up on his hands and knees. The world spun underneath him and he blinked hard to right it again before standing up. His teeth gnawed anxiously at the soft cotton of his sleeve, and he stepped over the coffee table to the couch beyond, sliding his cellphone off of the cushion. He checked the home screen. No, no missed calls. No new messages. As if he wouldn't have heard them from where he'd lain, less than two feet from the edge of the sofa. He bit into his sleeve again, sucked on a bundle of loose threads, and looked over at the door. Had it been a few minutes or a few hours?

His stomach unwound itself with a gurgle like an unclogged drain. It wouldn't be long before he wasn't alone anymore. He'd given her his address. 

She was coming.
