On August 4th a 17 year old girl was raped by four policemen two blocks away from her home. She went to the police station to place a report along with her mom. The police did nothing and told them there wasn’t enough evidence, even though she went through the medical examination that proved she was in fact raped.
Some days later, her information was leaked. Someone from inside the police leaked this girl’s personal information, which is illegal because she is a victim and she is supposed to be protected. Why did they do it? Intimidation. And sadly, it worked. Her and her family decided to not continue with the prosecution any further for a while.
Of course this caused outrage. And lots of women went to protest outside Mexico City’s main police department. They therw glitter at the police chief and then Mexico City’s mayor spoke. But she didn’t speak about the case of a 17 year old girl raped by 4 police officers; instead, she spoke about the “acts of vandalism” and “provocation” done by the protesters. Raising yet more outrage.
While al this was happening, two more cases ocurred: First, another girl was raped by a police officer, this time inside a museum. And then there was the case of a 70 year old woman who was beaten and raped inide her own home. Her son found her and took her to the hospital, where she died before she was able to say who attaked her.
This friday, August 16th, thousands of women took the streets of downtonw Mexico City to protest against the systematic violence women face every day in this country. So far, this year 9 girls and women have been raped and killed EVERY DAY just for the fact of being women.
