I mean think about it.

No R2, no Luke going and seeking out Obi Wan. Leia gets executed or escapes herself. Han probably never even gets involved. and the whole rebellion is likely dead on Yavin 4.

That said I wonder if R2 knew that he was helping to defeat his former best friend.
