Dagor-nuin-Giliath
Every star taunted him
reminded him of theÂ
three that he had been
stolen from him
and the bodyÂ
of his dear father
the first casualty
of a premature war
A Elbereth Gilthoniel
you mock me
He charged all fury
all madness, not method
Feänor soughtÂ
the fallen god whoÂ
had taken everything
he was met with flames
so he fought it with fire
He should of known better
but had had lived in hearth
and heat, all he knew was to burn
He died before the first dawn
smouldering away to ash
The Unnumbered Tears
Tears unnumbered ye shall shedâŚ
the day has come
The fire had been hung
throttled by betrayal
they stood by the banners
waiting for the trumpet calls
that would herald the comingÂ
of hope, instead
it did not come
restlessness simmersÂ
beneath the ranks
Forgive me, our hand was forcedÂ
a brother killed before the other
I do not begrudge you
I trust you I know you enough
you would never turn traitor
not after what they did to you
Hope came at last
in death cry, in sonorous march
and the long awaited callÂ
of the trumpet, too late
The Day Has come!
Came the kingâs cry
the darkness has gone
he was so sure
believing in hope.
Did he know notÂ
that hope was fickle?
We were so close
our hands almost touched
that was at least untill
at least beforeÂ
the slaughter roiled forward
dividing us
In the end he stood
upon a mountain
of corpses, his kingsguard
flaming ash falls like snow
around him
he was a silhouette
against the reaving flames
the gold in his hair burned
against the shadows
Fight me then,
if you are not craven
He was in the end
His fatherâs son
Fingon the Valiant
The High King the dreamer
the Golden
he had nought againstÂ
the fire that consumed
but steel and courage
every scar was a white flame
His other half,Â
the kinslayer was half was a field away
perhaps half a world
still he cried out when he saw
his loverâs body hewn.
They say there is no timeÂ
for one to weep in battles
But he did,Â
he wept with the fury
of a thousand flames
He fought and fought butÂ
as always he was too late
When it was done I came to you
Do you remember whenÂ
you said one day they will sing for us
when it all overÂ
it is over
but your dusk came before mine
I hold your body
or at least what remained
of your once proud visage
now savaged, brutalised
carnage crystallised
dead or dying? Dead.
If it was to end like this
it should have been us
side by side
hearing each otherâs final words
the final notes of the song
we started in the dawn
but the words were lostÂ
all that remained was your banner
and sword drowned in blood
They will say you were
the King of Song
not for the moonlit nights
where you would play the harp
they will not remember that
but they will remember the crown
your sword and the blood and tears
they will sing a thousand songs for your
deeds, writ in the annals
And though the tears be unnumbered
they cannot wash away
the bloody mire
left in the wake of bitter defeat
The Night is Passing
FĂŤanor
He forged and smithed
as his doctrine held
after all he had doneÂ
he knew
there was no lightÂ
without a touch ofÂ
method and madness distilledÂ
to purity of form
And how they shone
the light of the two trees
made captive in three stone
Dagor Bragollach
And the fire poured like rivers
from the black iron mountains
of the dreaded north, fumes of poison
warriors fell in thousandsÂ
and took with them in thousands
the songs of their valorous deeds
Fingolfin, High King of the Noldor
stands upon the gates of death
sounds horn and smites the doors
Fight me if you are not craven
Lord of the Slaves
He cried thus with the fury
of thunder piercing through
the earth, roiling in vast tunnels
unknown
He cries out for his slain people
for those that fight stillÂ
for those, like the crown less king
the kinslayer in his ever-cold fortress
growing gaunt, wan, even still
performing deeds of valour under siege
He cries for hungry orphaned babes
for lovers widowed before they wed
and for the families who cannot bury their sons
Face me now,Â
for my sword is a thrall
unto death and gluttony, it starves
it craves the taste of your blood
The fallen god emerges tall and mighty
beneath him the King is but a speck
gleaming like a star set in an icy shard
All things end
whispered the shadow
Not without a fight
the gleaming iceÂ
defiant shone back
Of course, they were both right
the king met his end
but not before the shadow was marred
The Legends of Beleriand
They were only trying to survive
but in survival are legends made
The night was a rare one
quiet, bloodless
they sit by the hearth
not wanting to move
and their cups are filled
with wine, or was it mead?
It could have been ale.
In the end,Â
it might have been all three.
The High King laughs,Â
his crown of souls
out of sight
They will sing of us one day
when it is all over
The other frowns
You mean when we are dead
The king shakes his head
he smiles still
When you and I become oneÂ
in the sights of gods and mortalsÂ
we will run off, ransom our crowns
and swords for peace and distance from
these thrones of gold built on endless bloodshed
for they are barren and cold
but our hands are warm
This time the other smiles
I hope they sing of you as
Fingon the Valiant
the CompassionateÂ
the High King of the Noldor
I hope they singÂ
of your crossing of the great ice
of how you went alone to hellâs depths
out of love and goodness
despite my betrayal
of how you turn our fell enemies
craven, crying for their mothers,Â
when they perchance the sight
of the glint of gold in your hair
and hear the sweet melodies on your tongue
turned into a fearsome battle song
I hope they singÂ
of how you defeated the father of dragons
and of how in your own grief
you gave comfort
to all the people in this realm
when you stood before the throne
a new light, a new sun, a new king
I hope they sing of your courage
and your kindness
The kingâs smile is gone
And you? Do not tell me again
your tale is not worthy of song
I hope they sing of you as
Maedhros the Tall,Â
the One-Handed
the King that Should Have Been
I hope they sing of how even
Oath-bound and a KinslayerÂ
you did not forget us andÂ
did not burn the ships
I hope they sing
of how you marched to embrace death
then of how you braved the tortures of the fallen
god, endured with silence as your last swordÂ
I hope they sing of how your valour
won us the long peace
of how you held the icy fortress
against the sudden flame
I hope they sing of your strength
and of your many sacrifices
Outside their window
there were more legends
being forged perhaps
greater than theirs
of the love of fair MaidensÂ
and their Lords
of cities returned unto the clay
from which they were wrought
of mothers raising their slain babes
cursing the gods
Of warriors blood staining
the black land in the North
They only hoped that if the singersÂ
ever wrote a song
that they would sing of themÂ
hand in hand
together, as the KingsÂ
who found Peace in the End
But they knew even then,Â
though their taleÂ
had not reached its final page
their hopes and dreams would never be
set down in ink, but in the white spaces
in between, which
a thousand minds will colour with
thoughts of what could have been
The Coronation of Fingon
The gold in his hair
had foreshadowedÂ
a golden crown
You stand behind a column
curtained from the world
your people await your arrival
your features grim grieving
still I see the boy they call valiant
running, laughing, golden
yes valiant for you were a pillar
another sun
to your people and to me
in spite of everything
Do not think I do not know
the red in your eyes are not from
sleepless nights
the stepping stones to the throne
but from weeping.
You loved your father well
I wish I could say the same of mine
before you came with liberty in your strike
I cursed him every day and every night
along with Death and all the gods
as I was bound twisted to our enemies pleasure
as I bound myself to an oath
You look at me now
with shining eyes, is itÂ
admiration or sorrow when you say
âThe crown should have been yours,
it never was mineâ
I do not deserve it, is
the answer ready on my tongue
instead, I say
âYou are my kingâ
you nod your headÂ
once, in thoughts lostÂ
you are not certain
but I am
so I say it again
âYou are my king
you always wereâ
The crown was not gold
he knew but made of shining souls
adorned with martyrâs blood
it ran down his body
he could hear their cries
ringing, echoing in his ear
when he stood before his people
he held all the dead
he held them in their death throes
every sacrifice weighedÂ
on his shoulders
scarring him
but the one of the kingÂ
with fire in his hair
who had placedÂ
the crown on his head
now kneeling before him in fealty
haunts himÂ
How many oathsÂ
will you swearÂ
from the goodness of your heart
before they pull you apart
in every direction
how long will it takeÂ
till you finally break?
Tell me never ever
though we both know
it will be a lie
you are the strength itself
that much I know
I would rather die
than see you broken
The Afterglow
(Previously titled: The Siege of Angband)
Meetings were small liberties
savoured and seldom
stolen glances gleanedÂ
over solemn faces
planning sieges over
ponderous tomes
a mischievous smile andÂ
the eye glinting with
repressed laughter andÂ
there was longing there too
They were thieves stealing
kisses and rough embraces
light stolen into shadow
they were a conspiracy, an affront
against every nation, king and his banner
the golden heir and his kinslayer
so strange for a love once
more sacred than faith
so strange for a loveÂ
with a thousand songs
a love that had moved the gods
I braid our hair together
dark inky shadowsÂ
twined with burning red
your lips on my neck whisper
they promise
one day we will be living in daylight
as we have done in the dawn
as we willÂ
once again in the duskÂ
and then, finallyÂ
in the afterglow
(ack thank you. still learning to navigate conversation and comments, especially on subjects that make me so excited!)-@outofangband
All good Iâm glad to be part of this learning journey :)
(apologies if my last ask sounded conceited. I'm autistic and can often get too over excited when I see things that remind me of my own thoughts.)-@outofangband
Not all conceited my dude. Donât be afraid to speak your mind. Most people love hearing what others have to say about their work and how it relates to similar thoughts theyâve had. Also I apologise for replying to the last one late, Iâve had a hectic few days.
Sorry for the second ask about this but I reread your poem about Maedhros and Morgoth and Iâve had thoughts/stories about Maedhros being branded with various names and chained above or beside Morgothâs throne so those lines really stood out to me quite painfully. Youâre very very talented-@outofangband
Seems like great minds think alike. But no defo a lot of lines are inspired by common themes in fan art and fanfics. Also I honestly donât mind getting multiple asks I love hearing what you have to say :).
From Basil Hallward to Dorian Gray
I know now what they say of you
is true, you have changed the world
rewritten history
But, let me tell you somethingÂ
they will never know
our afterglows will be violent
awash in neon violet
murder in the dark
I will be the mafia
and you will never know
how I watched the pinpricksÂ
of starlight at your lips
So comeÂ
and teach me patienceÂ
in cruel callous silence for
I had none to begin with
The Iliad flows from you
the power of all the gods
seized in a body of mortal grace
all the Odysseys are at your fingertips
I find them writ on string and chord
at its crescendo I hearÂ
the songs of Sappho's lovers
manifested in sunlit groves
and the lament of fallen kings
wreathed in bloodied gold
yet in the end from your tongue comes a sweet serenade
hailing from a foreign land
You colour the hills
the forests and mountains
with you laughter
in gold and silver linings
you are a catastrophe
just waiting to happen
I am a creator
who can put even monstersÂ
on a pedestal, making them
feral, fatal  masterpieces
but I can not lie to you
so know this
 We will both be left
gathering the shards of
what was and
what could have been
if this is love I do not want it
for it kills and it kills again
with no redemption
no remorseÂ
no salvation
Your poem about Maedhros and Morgoth is fantastic-@outofangband
This warms my heart thank you â¤ď¸â¤ď¸
Of Maedhros and Morgoth
To Death, they hailed
O proud grim Death,Â
a hallowed friend
to him they raisedÂ
their mead and ale
they marched, sang and drankÂ
to his sound
hoping that he be proudÂ
to take them once they fell
for fallen gods do no treat
nor do their shadowsÂ
have mercy
And my people fell like stars beside me
I remained alone, clapped in chains
for his dark pleasure,Â
shorn, naked
before my foes, I cursed Death
who had whored me to his perverse delights
I remain to gather the shardsÂ
of lost dignity through silence
And what a prize, the heir of fire
captured prince, a prisoner of fealty
and a war his own father started
In the dark fortress, he hangs
crucified, behind the throne
a decoration, welcoming, friend
foe, fiend, and beggar
The King of the fallen wears
oath incarnate shining bright
set thrice, in black ironÂ
wrought in malice
and he whispers words fell
and foul, gnawing the mind
his very presence splintering
the bones, searing flesh
branding a name not his own
The chains holding him tear him apart
You hold your brothers dear yet
they have forsaken youÂ
Still, silence prevails
To have valourÂ
in the face of evilÂ
was to hang above the voidÂ
by a hand chained fast
not knowing when you fall
The Crown of the Noldor
Reborn on wingsÂ
made of wind and gold
he was wrapped in silver
moonlit cloth,Â
carried in warm arms
hope was returned
and so was love
mortar rejoiningÂ
crumbling stone
but what did it cost?
I wanted to ask you why?Â
Why you stood vigil, day and night
pouring ambrosia into my lips
whispering the calmness ofÂ
lonely mountains in my ears
Was is really worth it?
that is, knowing the shadowsÂ
under your eyes grew as
the colour returned to mine.
What did you gain
by kissing every scar
till even I believed that there
could be no darknessÂ
underneath, only
that they bled starlightÂ
shining proud and bare
I never did ask you why.
I would like to sayÂ
that I knew the answers already
and in a way I did,Â
there was more love in you thanÂ
I dare deserve to claim
In truth, I did not wantÂ
it to end, this sweet parley
of building gardens and bridges
you sang to me, and
I learned to dance again
you taught me to fight
repaying the debt first madeÂ
under the twilight kingdom
we have forsaken
âCan you not seeâ I said to you
âthese hands have made me kinslayerâ
âOne hand didâ you agree
âbut it is gone and the other is yet cleanâ
you offered me redemption, salvation
and oath-bound I took itÂ
not knowing what it meant
For what it is worth
I know your blood is ichor
and only honey could pour
from your lips
And though even youÂ
could not help me forget
you did something more
you fashioned my nightmares
into a shining eyrie
gleaming proudÂ
on a withering height
I did not deserve this
The forsaken stoodÂ
in yet uncarven halls
still cavernous, banners
flayed by the wind
he was king yet he knelt
no golden throneÂ
or crown for him
only those in the shadows
of what was, and
when he was asked
what did hope cost?
he would smile
a small price he would say
a crown and a hand
Fingon Rescues Maedhros
I had thought you had forgotten me
left me to burn in the ice
but I know now that you
stood aside, a dissenting voice
against the thousand cries ofÂ
âBurn them all, leave them behind,Â
to rot and freezeâ
they tell me you spoke my name
called me Valiant
once or perhaps a thousand times?
it did not matterÂ
I know now that you did not forget
and though your brothers forsake you
I will not do the same
how can we forget after all
our names are branded on each others bodies
prayers scorching flesh through burning lips
He is alone, golden light
veiled in shadows armed with harp,
bow and sword, in his heart
memories of twilight and
a myriad of gleaming stars
In defiance and in sorrow he sings
two lines, and hearsÂ
a tortured two in reply
Back and forth it went
couplets coupling
lines overlapping
melodies entwined
faint semblances
rallying back and forth
in a cruel poor mockery
of a love long lost
Decades of silent weeping
the pining for song and
bitter curses in the steel cold
forgiven in one tortured glance
there remained between them
only memories
golden, glorious,Â
of love laughter and the dawn
They wept thenÂ
but the tears were
not yet unnumbered
shed for a ravaged body
already a cadaver
begging for the mercy of death
He drew his bow
to kill foe, friend, lover
and he prayedÂ
even though the gods had vowed
to heed nought their prayers
for they were
both of them born from pride
carrying their fatherâs sins
Yet it seemed tears can still stir
the gods to action for hope cameÂ
on winds gilded in feathered gold
and it carried him up
to free the captive prince
from the chains
that held his hand fast
the blood ran down his wrists
in small creeks of red
as he pleaded for forgivenessÂ
and begged once more for death
In the end I turnedÂ
those creeks into rivers and oceans
red and macabre
with one fell strike
the very one you hadÂ
taught me once long agoÂ
with you our right handÂ
guiding my wrist
the hand I now sacrifice
in return for your life
hoping that one dayÂ
I could repay that debt
your poem of Fingon battling Glaurang is amazing-@outofangband
Thank you so much â¤ď¸
