your pet is not ‘spoiled’ because you gave it food, water, vet care, and other basic necessities. you owe it to your pet to take the best care of them that you possibly can. when people point out ways to improve your care, it isn’t an attack on you - it comes from a place of respect and love for that animal. if you love your pet, spend time working to take care of them in the best way possible. research before, not after you bring a new pet home. continue researching and learning through your pet’s life; never stop trying to improve your care.

Working in a pet supply store, one of the things my coworkers and I like to hear the least is “my [pet] is soooo spoiled” from people who are buying items that meet a pet’s basic needs.

Your pets need food. They need, with some exceptions, at least basic grooming. They need enrichment; toys are not a luxury item. They need dental and medical care. They need to be protected in some way from parasites and the diseases they can carry (added bonus, good flea and tick protection for your pets can also decrease your risk of being exposed to those same diseases!) Yes, these things can get expensive. If you are genuinely struggling to afford your pet’s basic necessities, there are organizations that can help. Look them up online or, if you’re comfortable doing so, ask an employee at a pet store. If you’re in good shape financially, honestly? STFU about how much your pet’s needs cost. That’s the promise you made when you chose to bring that living creature into your home.

Same goes for “jokes” about how your pet eats better than you do. Good, that’s how it should be! What you eat is largely a choice. What your pet eats is your responsibility.

Most of the time I manage to keep this fact out of my mind, but sometimes it just suddenly hits me… hard. That I’ll never be as good looking, cool, brave, kindhearted etc. as my parame, no matter how much they’re based on me. That I’ll never be as well liked as they are, in their own universe. That my parame’s love interest and friends aren’t real and never will be, even though I’ve actually grown to care about them.
