Dialogue: Does it Reveal Character or Propel Plot?

Chloe Fox and Tillie Meade:

"Exactly what stories do you think you gone hear?"

"Miss Skeeter, do that not sound kind a dangerous to you?"

"Shhh, please. Do you know what would happen to me if Miss Leefolt found out I talked behind her back?"

Grandmother: "Oh, I presume I'm not really dead."

Girl: "Whatchu talkin' 'bout gram?"

Personal Identity

1.            Do you think having a personal identity is important?  Explain your answer. 

It makes you unique, no one is the same even if they have the same interest. Everyone is unique like a snowflake or a fingerprint. You define yourself, no one can define you. 

  2.            How do you think our society views individual identity? Explain.

"Society" a lot of the time judges people by the way they look or how they dress, behaviors, who they hang out with and they don't get to know who they really are. If someone may dress like a "goth" doesn't mean they are mean and hate the world. You could end up getting to know them and they could be nice, and friendly.

3.            Can a person have more than one identity? Explain.

People almost always act a different way around different people. For example: Ms.Abbott acts differently with her friends than with her students.

Internal vs. External Conflict

Indirect Characterization:

"Forgotten the taste and smell of the world that she left behind"

"The angles are all wrong now, she's ripping wings off of butterflies"

Direct Characterization: 

"So one day he found her crying, coiled up on the dirty ground, her prince finally came to save her, and the rest she can figure out"

"If it's not real you can't hold it in your hand, you can't feel it with your heart, then I won't believe it, but if it's true you can see it with your eyes, oh even in the dark, and that's where I want to be, yeah"

Theme: The theme of the song "Brick by Boring Brick" by Paramore is person vrs. self. The "person" in the song is the lead singer of Paramore: Hayley Williams. She is in a way battling her self because she is  trying to get  over her past self who got to caught up in a "fairytale, or more simply, thing that will never happen or aren't real."

Meaning: The meaning of the song is that you should not "live in a fairytale" this means that you shouldn't keep thinking or spending time worrying or fantasizing over things that will never happen. The most important quote in this song that helps explain the meaning of the song is "Well make sure to build your life brick by boring brick or the wolf's going to blow it down." To "build you life brick by boring brick" is to keep yourself in reality, to build your life realistically. What the author means by "Or the wolf's going to blow it down" is that one day if you keep living your life in a "fairytale" someone or something is going to knock you into reality, and make you get back to real life.

DO NOW: Please answer the following questions.

1.           Who (or what) is your most favorite character of all time?  Why? What is it about that character that made you like them?  Was it something they did or said – OR maybe how they acted in the book (or film)?  If you can’t think of one you may talk about someone in your life that means something to you.

  Ex:  My favorite character of all time is Sam in Lord of the Rings.  His personality is really funny and he is kind of silly.  But he is so loyal.  I would want a friend like him.  You can tell he really cares about the people in his life.  He is also brave.  I don’t know if I could be brave like him but I think I would try.  Sam is easy to love as a character because he has faults too.  Like, he doesn’t trust people well and they need to trust Gollum/Smeagal to survive… I can connect to how much he cares about his friends.  I love my friends too.

Character Descriptions, Ms.Abbott:

DO NOW: Please write a character description of the person sitting next to you (Be nice ;)

Make sure that your description would let someone who didn’t know them – picture what that person was like.

 Ex:  Her long Rapunzel-like wavy hair drapes over her shoulders everyday.  Today though, she had it in a bun.  Must be an important day.  Her hazel eyes had glints of gold that sparkled when she was happy.  She was confident though, even though her demeanor was soft.  Nobody messed with her!  She could rule an army.
